CORN BELT HELD SAFE BY G, 0, P. Won’t Match Democrats by Million-Dollar Fight. By United Press WASHINGTON, Aug. 31.—Republicans do not intend to match the miilion-dollar budget of the Democrats in the farm belt, James R. Good, western manager, announced today after a conference with Herbert Hoover. “Our expenses will be comparatively small,” Good said. Without mentioning the name of John Raskob, Democratic national chairman, who announced that Smith forces would spend $1,000,000 in the Middle West, Good said. “You can’t buy the West for a million or any other sum. Any attempt along that line would end in disaster. The vote is not purchasable that way. Good said Republicans would limit expenditures in the corn belt to circulation of literaature and promotion of speaking campaigns. He said he believed the West is in good shape for Hoover.

COUNCIL WILL VOTE ON CITY BUDGET TODAY Tax Levy Set at sl.lO for Final Approval at Special Session. City council will hold a special meeting tonight to formally approve the 1929 city budget and tax levy. The council meeting as a committee of the whole this week agreed on a sl.lO tax rate for 1929, bringing in about $9,336,000. The council cut the $1.15 request of Mayor L. Ert Slack 5 cents following a series of conferences to “remove the water” from the budget. “We ’ll try and get along on whatever the council gives us,’ ’ Slack replied when asked his opinion on the council’s action. The revised general fund budget tentatively approved by the council will leave an estimated balance Dec 31, 1929, of $65,811.18, a supplemental report on the general fund budget submtited to council members by William H. Book, Chamber of Commerce civic affairs director, shows. The supplementary report shows appropriations recommended by city controller as $4,882,791.12; actual appropriations of council, $4,732,951.02. With an estimated unexpended balance Dec. 31, 1929, of $118,323.75, it was estimated actual expenditures during 1929 will be only $4, 614,627.27. Revenue/ the report estimates, will be $4,680,438.45, leaving the estimated $65,811.18 balance at the close of the year. Recommendation is made that salary increases be made only on written executive order of the department head, the budget fixing maximum salaries only. In the past, Book said, new departmental employes could demand the same salary as their experienced predecessors. The council is said to have approved this idea. The report suggests the fact there has been no increase in miscellaneous receipts in four years, should create doubt that the city is collecting all possible revenue from this source, which includes various licenseand permits. Saving of $20,000 to $25,000 a year is suggested by continuing reduction of a lumen power of street lights. The report also urged investigation of pyament of about $25,000 a year for excess cable space notno wused because of reduction in number of lights.
