WILD HORSES BEING DRIVEN FROMBANGES Roaming Ponies Started cn f Death March to Leave Grass to Cattle. B’l United Press EL PASO, Texas, Aug. 24.—Wild piorses on the plains of the Southwest are in a great death march as a result of the increase in beef prices. Range grass is not plentiful enough to feed both the cattle herds and the thousands of unproductive wild horses that roam the plains. Ranchers have declared that the wild horse must die probably in reduction plants. By a curious irony of fate, the only route by which many of the doomed animals can be driven to the plant at El Paso, is over the desolate 100-mile highway from Hillsboro, N. M., that thirst-tortured Spaniards three centuries ago named “Jornado del Muerto”—the Journey of Death! For the broomta.il ponies and the wild burros, the barren trail is truly a journey of death. Water is scarce on the trail and lockjaw breaks out in some of the herds. For the animals who escape death on the trail, there are the bullets of the slaughter house executioner. There have been wild horses in

Hints to Mothers—lt’s all right to bring your baby up on water, as long as he gets plenty of milk. As demonstrated here by tiny Paul Clpary, the 2-year-old diving mavel of Delaware County, Pa., it’s possible to take a nip—even a nipple, for that matter at one and the same time. Even Mr. and Mrs. Neptune might have been proud of such a youngster.
west Texas and New Mexico ever since animals escaped from the camps of Cortez and De Soto in the sixteenth century. Little disturbed by man, and in recent years constantly augmented by strays from ranches and cavalry posts, immense herds formed. Once in a while cattlemen roundup a few and break them for ranch purposes. In 1918 several thousand were corralled and sent to France to drag artillery pieces for the al-

lies. Only recently have the herds been considered a menace. The doom of the wild horse was sealed with the record price of beef lin 1927. Asa result of the barring of animals from Argentina on account of the foot and mouth disease, American beef commanded the highest price since the World War. For the first time in years there was an incentive for the cattleman to raise maximum herds. He is doing that this year and the wild horse must make room.

LEGION SEEKS LOST VETERANS BY BULLETINS Circulars Listing Missing Men Sent Over Country Monthly. Pleas from families of men who served in the World War and from whom nothing has been heard since, that they be found or that information concerning them be “forwarded, come daily into the national American Legion offices here. The Legion now issues monthly “The Port of Missing Men Bulletin.” This bulletin goes to several hundred newspapers and to all Legion publications. Name of each man sought is set out in heavy type followed by a detailed description, when he last was heard of and his most recent address. Since the Legion does not receive replies it is not known how many men have been found through this agency. Since Jan. 1 names of 297 missing men have been listed. Each person’s name first is checked with the War Department, in case some trace of him might have been found. If not, the name is placed on the bulletin. Forty-four names were carried on the last bulletin issued. Some of the men have not been heard of since they enlisted; others
since their discharge, snd in one case a former Army captain disappeared after leaving for Washington, D. C., last May. Legion officials said there was no hope in some cases where, no doubt, soldiers lost their lives in service and have died unidentified Others are those who have been shell shock victims and those who have lost thier memories since the World War. None from Indiana were listed in the last bulletin.
