JiOOVER CLOSES r FARM PARLEYS IN IOWATODAY Hundreds Brave Rains to Confer With Nominee; Watson Present. BY PAUL R. MALLON United Press Staff Correspondent CEDAR RAPIDS, lowa, Aug. 23. •—A drizzling rain greeted Herbert ■'ljoover’s farm conference today, but it did not dampen the ardor of the several hundred farm leaders gathered here with him to discuss his farm relief program. The tall corn grew taller still as. the farmer representatives of fifteen States met in hotels to frame their message to be delivered to the Republican presidential candidate. They demanded no specific program for farm relief, such as Hoover set out in his West Branch speech, nor were they interested in safeguarding generalities for their crops, they said. But they proposed to establish with the nominee the theory that farm relief should be the first issue for disposal by the Hoover cabinet, 'should he be elected, and they indicated their confidence that Hoover will find the way for them. Grumblings of Veto The nominee did not commit himself beyond his three-ply program in his conferences with the farmers. He promised a Federal farm board with full powers to lend governmental advice and money to the farmers. He amplified his suggestion for a costly development of inland waterways to promote cheaper prices of farm freight rates. He mentioned the necessity for revision of the tariff to protect the farmers’ market. There were grumblings in the farm conference about the vetoed McNary-Haugen bill. The lowa group, for instance, was unable to select a delegation of ten to wait upon the nominee because the 150 members attending the meeting Wednesday were unable to agree upon the selection of the delegation. The final day of the tliree-day Series of farm conferences here and at West Branch got under way early when the representatives of Ilinois, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky aad Tennessee met to choose their delegates to meet Hoover. Hears Smith Talk Later delegations representing Missouri, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Kansas, North and South Dakota, Wisconsin, Minnesota and Michigan were to meet for similar action. Hoover plans to start on his special train to Washington before the Republican rally planned for tonight in the Memorial Building. The meeting will be addressed by Senators Brookhart and James E. Watson, pre-convention presidential candidate from Indiana, who opposed the Hoover nomination and advocated the McNary-Haugen bill. Watson will appear in behalf Os the Republican presidential ticket. Hoover tuned in the radio for a part of Governor Smith’s acceptance speech Wednesday night, but an electrical storm cut short his recepton of the program. He had read parts of an advance coup of the speech, but had no comment to make.
