NEW ORLEANS IN THROES OF PURITYSWEEP Gamblers, Long Immune, Dealt With Harshly in Cleanup. NEW ORLEANS, Aug. 20.—New Orleans, the South’s largest city, and long renowned as the country’s “wide open” town, is apparently facing a long siege of reformist administration which bids fair to shut down the gambling lid. Heretofore spasmodic campaigns have bee.i waged against open gambling, only to be dropped within a week or ten days and. the luxuriously appointed gaming palaces of the city and its spacious suburbs again would bloom forth in all their gayness. This time, however, it was different. The announcement was made a month or two ago that local business men, backed by the Association of Commerce, Young Men’s Business Club, and the American Legion, were tired of gambling. Warning to GambTSfs This announcement was followed by a warning to gamblers from the city hall and from Superintendent of Police Thomas Healy with subsequent widespread raids. Never before in these campaigns have the licensed clubs come under the heel of police harshness. This time, however, they were included in the campaign of “clean up” and today virtually every one of the 300 or 400 “social clubs” are •shuttered and dark. The fight to shut down gaming was taken to Baton Rouge by leaders in the New Orleans campaign. These leaders sought the co-opera-tion of the Governor in shitting up the' palaces in Jefferson and St. Bernard parishes which adjoin New Orleans. Sheriffs Clean Up The Governor’s response was that New Orleans should first clean up its own area and then come to him with “clean skirts” and he would do the rest. The fight was on. The sheriffs of the two parishes above mentioned were given orders to clean up. This resulted in the closing, at least temporarily, of gaming palaces in Jefferson and St. Bernard. Meanwhile New Orleans police carried on a vigorous campaign within the city.
