62.000 RETURN TO CLASSROOMS IN CITY SEPT. 10 1,800 Teachers to Attend General Meetings First Week of Month. Final preparations for opening city schools Sept. 10 to approximately 62,600 grade and high school pupils \7\ll be made when 1,800 teachers attend the annual teachers’ meetings, Sept. 4 to 7, Superintendent Charles F. Miller announced today. Enrollment this year will exceed that of last year by approximately 1,000 pupils, Miller predicted. Tuesday and Thursday, Sept. 4 and 6, general meetings will be held at Shortridge High School with sessions in the charge of Dr. William A. Oocker, Miss Rousseau McClellan, Ernest Gy Hesser, Mrs. Jeanand Harry E. Wood. Schools Renovated Wednesday and Friday teachers will meet with departmental heads to plan organization for opening of school. Other instructors will include Miss Lucy Montgomery and Mrs. Ida C. Langerwisch. Superintendent Charles F. Miller will address the teachers probably Sept. 7. Indianapolis school buildings are being prepared for the opening of school by 258 janitors and engineers, supplemented by a corps of more than 100 additional workers During the vacation months these workmen have been painting, varnishing, repainhg roofs, steps, desks, chairs and otherwise renovating the buildings. One new building, School 84, at Fifty-Seventh St. and Central £ve., and an eight-room addition at School 73, Thirtieth and School Sts., will be opened for the first time Sept. 11. In addition, rooms not used in the past are being opened at Schools 67. 68 and 85. Two new wings at Arsenal Technical High School containing twenty-nine class roome, will not be ready for several weeks after the start of school, Miller said. Portables Aid Congestion Portable schools are being transferred to relieve crowded conditions at Schools 42, 43 and 21. Miller said about eighty rooms will be in portable buildings this year, no increase over last year. v Miller said it is probable not more than ten half-day classes will be necessary this year because of new buildings, transfer of portables and opening of heretofore unused rooms in some schools. Last year there were twenty-four half-day classes, all for primary grades. New Shortridge High School will be completed probably in time for occupancy late in November.
