POLICE ATTACK ON ATTORNEYS STIRSRUMPUS Too Anxious to Earn Money Defending Criminals, Says Denver Chief. % Bu United Press DENVER, Colo., Aug. 10— A lively bit of argument has been started here because the chief of police, without waiting for anyone to knock a chip off his shoulder or shake a fist under his nose, expressed an opinion that "most lawyers worship the dollar and will go any route to get it.” After Chief Robert F. Reed had delivered that pronouncement, he elaborated the desigri a little, waited for the repercussion and then, when it came, stepped out of town for a week’s vacation. The storm still rages and indignant attorneys probably will not have exhausted all their material by the time Reed returns. “If lawyers would cooperate with the law enforcement bodies instead of trying to hamper the forces of law protection, I believe there would be less crime,” said the chief in his original discussion. “It has reached a stage in this country where every man placed in jail for a major criminal offense suddenly has tremendous constitutional rights at stake and these must be protected. “Nothing, however, is said about the constitutional right of the citizen offended. “There should be a national habitual criminal law. "There are a few lawyers who will not handle known guilty crim-

After a three-hour battle, Ed Stedman, of Beaumont, Texas, and his fishing party hauled in this 2,100-pound sawfish from the Gulf of Mexico. It is sixteen and one-half feet long, the second largest ever caught in Texas waters. Inal, but most lawyers worship the dollar and will go any route to get it.” The response to Reed’s assertion was speedy, voluminous and direct. In addition to defending their own profession, many lawyers hit back at the police. Police officials, said the attorneys, often are predisposed to consider an accused man guilty when, before the law, he is innocent until he has been proved guilty.

190,000 MEN IN GUARD BY 1930 IS GOAIOF U. S. Militia Bureau Reports Steady Increase Is to Be Program. BY C. J. LILLEY limes Staff Correspondent WASHINGTON, Aug. 10.—Although far from its peace-time goal of 250,000, the National Guard is growing slowly, but steadily each year, according to report of the Militia Bureau of the War Department today. By the end of the fiscal year 192930 the guard’s enrolled strength will be 190,000. On June 30 of this year it was 186,260 and June 30 of next it is scheduled to be 188,000. Growth is limited by appropriations fixed by Congress. Though agreement between the Federal Gov ernment and the States provides for a National Guard of 250,000, this mark cannot be reached until the money is provided. Average cost to the Federal Government has been $29,816,004 during the last five years, while in four of the five years the States have contributed an average of $11,956,258 annually. For 1928 there is a Federal appropriation of $31,103,737 and for 1929 the sum is $31,714,656. The national defense act of 1916, dropped the word militia and made the guard a national organization under the supervision of the Federal Government and the States. Although it was at first planned to have a guard strength of 435,000, this was found to be too ambitious a program and in 1923 the quarter-

‘WONDERFUL NEW CURE’ FOR CANCER DOUBTED Public Health Officials Point Out Quacks Always Finding Remedies. Bu Science Service WASHINGTON, Aug. 10.—Reports of an alleged new cancer cure, discovered by a public school teacher in Jugoslavia, are greeted with
skepticism by officials of the United States Public Health Service. Marvelous new cures for cancer and tuberculosis are being “discovered” all the time, and Europe is just as full of quacks, ready to separate the fool from his money, as the United States, in the opinion of these officials. Cures announced directly to the public and press rather than through reputable reports to scientific Journals or societies should be examined most critically before

acceptance. A cancer sufferer may lose his life because of the delay before undertaking scientific treatment while he is trying out the new “sure cure.” The tragedy of socalled cures is the ultimate disappointment of those sufferers and their families in whom false hopo Is raised. Natives of Savo, one of the Solomon Islands, regard the shark as a god and cast their dead into the sea as an offering to their finny deity.
