SMALL DEALERS PLAN FIOHT ON POWERJRUST Virtually at Mercy of Big Companys in Trade, Says Leader. BY DEXTER M. KEEZER WASHINGTON, Aug. 7. —lndependent electrical manufacturers, distributors and retailers virtually are at the mercy of large electric light and power combinatioqs, A. B. Walton, manager of the Association of Certified Electricians, said today in dispatching an appeal to the National Association of Electragists, meeting in Chicago, to strike back at the ‘‘power trust.” According to Walton, whose organization is playing a lone had among electrical appliance dealers and contractors in bucking the power group, the large electric power companies enjoy an unfair advantage in selling electrical equipment because they are able to charge much of the cost of doing this business to power consumers. Small Dealers Facing Wall The independent electrical appliance industry, he said, is being forced to the wall, but because the power companies easily can crush any small group of dealers, they do not dare to fight back. Walton in his letter urged that organized steps be taken to throw off power company domination. ‘‘There are thousands of small dealers who would like to strike back,” he said, “but they fear that any move in opposition to the power companies will mean prompt annihilation.” Control Retail Channels “The utilities have gained control of the retail channels for the distribution of household current consuming devices. FIND NOSE NOT CIGARET-WISE Scientists Question Validity of Ads. By Science Service NEW YORK, Aug. B.—The evidence in widely published cigaret advertisements that tell how blindfolded celebrities selected the particular brand whose money bought the advertising space is called in question by exhaustive psychological tests carried out in Reed College, Portland, Ore., by Louis Goodman, a graduate student. Instead of the 100 per cent recognition claimed in the advertisements, the seasoned smoker-subjects were able to pick their favorite brands only one in every nine times that it was presented to them. Stuart Chase, who is campaigning against purchasing based on tradenames, fancy labels and other pres-ent-day advertising methods rather than upon quality, will summarize these tests in the next issue of the New Republic. By pure chance the smoker should be able to recognize his favorite brand 17.6 per cent of the attempts, but in the tests the rating made was only 11.6 per cent. Even when not blindfolded the testers could not tell what cigarets they were smoking if they were not allowed to see the label. The conclusions of the tests

claim that smokers can not recognize brands on the basis of odor or taste, name brands correctly when deprived of visual clews, differentiate between two cigarets, differentiate between strong and mild cigarets, or tell the difference between straight Turkish and domestic tobaccos.
