BY KENNETH WATSON WASHINGTON, Aug. 2.—Uncle Sam’s special "diar-'-md squad,” for which Congress appropriated SIOO,000 to break up an international ring responsible for smuggling millions of 'ollars worth of gems into the country annually, has already proven its worth. Although it was not organized until July 1 the squad already has a- rated three smugglers believed to be members of the gang. Thousands of dollars worth cf uncut diamonds were recovered. T ohn Roberts, head of the squad, has notified Treasury officials here that other arrests are expected as the result of information obtained from the prisoners, wh" are being held in New York awaiting action of the Federal grand jury. The diamond squad was organized to meet the protests of the American Jewelers Protective Association that the smuggling menace was threatening to put honest dealers out of business. Meyer D. PREVALENCE OF CANCER IS LAID TO SPEED ACE Movies, Athletic Excesses Among Causes, Asserts French Doctor. t py United Press PARIS, Aug. 3.—Civilization has its advantages but it is also responsible for cancer, according to an eminent French physician, Dr. Lowenthal, after several years of effort to find the source of the malady which is costing thousands of lives each year in countries which are able to combat successfully a score of other plagues. Dr. Lowenthal, in an article in the Revue Mondiale, ascribes the disease to either toxic influences or emotional changes. The first, he says, may Include anything from sit-ing too long at a well-laden table to an excessive use of tobacco, alcoholic drinks and even coffee. The second source is even wider in its scope. A man with too noble ambitions become so excited that cancerous lesions form in his system. Another who plays heavily at gaming tables or speculates on the Bourse is confronted with the same danger. BOOTLEG STILLS GET SMALLER Operators Fear Investing Heavily. Bn Times Special WASHINGTON, Aug. 2.—Bootleggers are becoming afraid to make large investments in stills. Instead they are relying on larger numbers of smaller plants. This trend is indicated in reports to Prohibition Commissioner James M. Doran. In Ohio, Pennsylvania, Illinois and North Carolina, prohibition agents during the fiscal year ended July 1, seized more than twice as many stills as they did in 1927, but only a little more than twothirds as much liquor. According to Doran, liquor law violators are becoming more cautious and are afraid to have large investments in manufacturing apparatus lost through capture by pro-

The reports from the five States mentioned above s'how a total of 2,700 stills seized this year as compared with 1,229 last year, with but 231,409 gallons of liquor confiscated as compared with 304,345 gallons last year. Bn Times Special RICHMOND, Ind., Aug. 3.—While an intensive search was being made in Howard County for Willard Carson, wanted for the slaying at Liberty two years ago of his father, Clint Carson, he turned up here in the role of a burglar. He stole a shirt from the home of Edward Harris. Identity was established by Mrs, Harris from photographs shown her by police who hunted Carson in fields south of the city after he fled from the house, but found no trace of him.
