OPEN LAST GAP IN PAVING ON U.SJROAD2O La Grange and Steuben County Residents Hold Celebration. U. S. Highway 20 is now completely paved. The weekly bulletin of the State Highway Department, issued today, points out that the ten-mile gap between Lagrange and Steuben county line is open to traffic. Director John D. GOVERNOR RACE OF DEMOCRATS PROVESCLOSE Two Candidates Run Nip-and-Tuck in Tennessee Primary. Bit United Press MEMPHIS, Tenn.. Aug. 3.—A nip and tuck race for the Democratic gubernatorial election in Tennessee has developed with less than 1,500 votes separating the leaders. Governor Henry H. Horton had a poll of 78,567, against 77,143 for Hill McAlister, former State treasurer, with incomplete tabulations from 1,698 out of 2,230 precincts in the State. In the United States senatorail primary, however. Senator K. D. McKellar, incumbent, appeared assured of a two to one lead over Finis J. Garret, twelve-term Congressman, with a vote of 81,786 to 42.897. The race for Governor was accompanied by Horton’s charges of irregularities in the voting at Memphis and McAllister charges df excessive expenditures. A contest before the State legis- | lative committee on campaign funds ! and before the State election board
was forecast by some political observers. Meanwhile, Raleigh Hopkins of Columbia, a political ally of Congressman J. Will Taylor, appeared to have won the Republican nomination of Governor by a two to one lead over John Raulston, who presided at the famous Scopes evolution trial. Hopkins had polled 51,231 against 27,156 for Raulston. Mayor James Fowler of Knoxville won the uncontested Republican nomination for United States Senator and will oppose Senator McKellar in the November election.
