In the Cotton Market
(By Thomson & McKinnon) NEW-YORK, July 27.—The cotton market was strong at the opening and prices advanced further on reports of additional rains in the belt. The body of the market .’was thin, however, and small sales of a semi-professional character caused prices to east off. Recent weather has been of exactly the nature that Is supposed td favor the increase of weevils and we have no doubt that such is the case, but at the sameg time plant condition has shown improvement, especially in Texas. We already see occasional small sales against receipts of new cotton and we feel that we must soon have some definite information to the effect that the weevils f ctivtty will materially reduce he production oi cotton this year, or-a further decllpe Is inevitable. In the Stock Market
(By Thomson & McKinnon) NEW YORK. July 27 —There was a continuation of the current buying movement thr-ughout today's session. Trading, nowever. was on a broader scale than recently and more attention was given to the Inactive groups. This was particularly true of ihe rails, which on the whole were higher and stronger. There was little of importance in the news dispatches nor were there any new developments in the money market. Public participation in the market is undoubtedly increasing and the only explanaiton for this Change is that g-eat deal more attention is being Raid to Improved industrial conditions ran to the often repeated tumors of credit stringency. Os course Only time will tell whether or not this is the proper attitude. Nevertheless, for the time being, the buying power in the market is sufficient to take care of all offerings and outward indications are that this condition may continue. CORN ADVANCES SHARPLY WHILE OTHERSDECLINE Wheat Drops Heavily and Oats Closes Fractionally Lower. Bu United Press CHICAGO, July 27.—Renewal of hedging pressure with lack of aggressive buying suport sent wheat sharply lower on the Board of Trade today. Corn advanced sharply, while oats was off a fraction. Wheat closed I*4 to 1% cents lower, corn was up % to 1% cents and oats was off % to %-cent. Provisions were unchanged. Comparative strength at Liverpool and Winnipeg uncovered some buying of wheat on the opening losses. Receipts of over 2,000 cars in the southwest brought a renewal of hedging pressure. Only a moderate export trade was reported. Traders who sold September and December com expecting a decline were forced to cover early in the day. Reports that Europe was buying heavily in the deferred deliveries were a bullish influence. July oats suffered from liquidation early in the day. Prospects of increasing receipts were a bearish influence. Chicago Grain Table —July 27WHEAT— Prev. Open. High. Low. Close, close.
