RESCUED ITALIA CREW ENTRAINS FOR W HOME Cheers, Glory Lacking as Nobile Silently Leads Men From Ship. Bu United Press NARVIK, Norway, July 27.—The rescued members of the crew of the dirigible Italia were en route home today, but on a journey that was lacking in the glory that would have been theirs had not the polar dirigible crashed on an ice floe May 25. Headed by General Umberto Nobile the Italia crew boarded a trkin here at 6:30 p. m. Thursday night, after arriving from Kings Bay aboard the Citta Di Milano, and were sped on their way. There were no cheers. There were few comments. The men had been cautioned by Premier Benito Mussolini of Italy not to make any statements and not to give interviews on the homeward journey. Silently Board Train Natale Ceccioni, the engineman, who was injured when the Italia crashed, seemed to be the only one of the group suffering. He walked with aid of crutches. His foot was hurt when the Italia crashed. All other members of the group appeared well as they silently boarded the special car that had been reserved for them by the Italian government. It was a strange arrival this group made Thursday. The Citta Di Milano put into harbor and a crowd gathered at the pier. The supply vessel did not dock, however, and word soon was forthcoming that the Italia men would not come ashore until the crowd had dispersed. General Nobile, the commander of that unfortunate expedition, who has been blamed for permitting himself to be rescued ahead of his companions, stood at the rail of the craft. He appeared well, but had little interest in the proceedings around him. Dodge Major Cities They were finally landed silently and later taken aboard the train that is to carry them to Italy. The cheers that would have been theirs had the fight been successful, were lacking. Every effort is to be made to dodge the major cities of the continent on this trip to Italy. This attempt will be to prevent embarrassment to the Italia group. The train, however, must stop at Copenhagen and is expected to arrrive there Sunday morning. ‘STEVE’ RULING AUG. 21 La Porte Judge to Decide on Mandamus Suit Dismissal. After serving three years in the Army, during which time he rescued three people from drowning, Boy, former mascot of the soldiers at Ft. Clayton, Panama, has retired to civilian life. Boy pulled a soldier out of the water at Panama for his first rescue; then he got help when another soldier was drowning, and wound up his record by pulling out the small son of the post captain. He’s shown here with Miss Victoria Wolfe, his custodian on the steamer from Panama to San Francisco.
LABOR FIGHTS DROP Few6r Disputes During 1927 Than for 11 Years. Bu Times Special WASHINGTON, July 27.—Labor disputes were fewer in 1927 than at any time in the previous eleven years, the Department of Labor reported today. There were only onesixth as many strikes or lockouts reported as for the highest year, 1917, the number being 734 against 4,450 in 1917. Only about 350,000 workers were affected ift 1927, as against more than 4,000,000 in 1917. Disputes also were shorter. Wages formed the principal subject of controversy, and most strikes or lockouts concluded in victory for the workers, during the eleven years. New York, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania had more than half the strikes of 1927, and these States, together with Ohio, California and four others, had more than threefourths of all the disputes reported.
