NICHOLSON PAINTS A REAL CHARACTER Hoosier Author Takes Andrew Jackson as His Hero in His Latest Novel, ‘The Cavalier of Tennessee,’ ' Which Is Just Published. BY WALTER D. HICKMAN UP to the birth of “The Cavalier of Tennessee,” I have always thought of “The House of a Thousand Candles” when the name of Meredith Nicholson was mentioned. I never pass Mr. Nicholson on the street or see him elsewhere in public than “The House of a Thousand Candles” goes romping through my mind. But now after'reading his latest, “The Cavalier of Tennessee” probably will accompany “candles” or even take its place in my memory box.

The reason for the earlier novel taking such a strong position in my memory is probably due to the fact that on first reading it years ago it made such a profound impression upon me. That story was good corking theater to me and I visualized it so deeply that I have been unable to erase it. "The main reason for “The Cavalier of Tennessee” taking such a strong position in my thinking apparatus is due chiefly to the fact that Nicholson has actually brought to life the story of Andrew Jackson. This is not a biography, but a novel of the type that I call a costume romance, because all the characters of Jackson’s day dressed and thought so differently from us today. Nicholson has caught that atmosphere, dress and thought of Jackson and all those who came in contact with him. When Jackson kills a man in a duel we feel just how Jackson must thought when public opinion started against him. And we realize that the public wiped out the thought for many reasons. The author gives us Jackson from the time he was officiating for the prosecutor at Jonesboro until the people had voted that the 'doors of the White House should open for him. In addition to the amazing qualities which went to make up Jackson, his life had one of the sweetest romances ever lived by man. His strange wooing of Rachel, their marriage, their love and their troubles all go toward the making of a gigantic and realistic love story. I think Nicholson has done best toward Jackson at the time Burr came into his life with his nasty scheme of overthrowing the Government. When Jackson found out that Burr was not on the level, we see the fine quality of which Jackson was made. Jackson’s life story is a great story and Nicholson has made it as great and as realistic as the original. In saying that, I am paying the author the greatest compliment possible. * I sincerely believe that Nicholson has written a big story and a beautiful one in “The Cavalier of Tennessee,” and I also believe that when the name of this Hoosier author is but memory, he will be remembered for having written “The Cavalier of Tennessee,” published by the Bobbs-Merrill Company. Indianapolis theaters today offer: Hyams and Mclntyre at the Lyric; “Madame X” at English’s; “Nightstick” at Keith’s; “The Racket” at the Apollo; “The Drag Net” at the Indiana; “Hot News” at the Circle, and Harry Fox at Loew’s Palace.
