DEMOCRATS TO MAKE VICTORY SURE IN SOUTH Active Campaign Will Be Waged to Offset G. 0. P. Drive in Dixie. * By United Press NEW YORK, July 25.—A “militant” campaign by Democrats to combat Republican efforts to split the Solid South and swing some States behind Herbert Hoover is ■toeing considered by party leaders here. The suggestion was brought by Senator Pat Harrison of Mississippi to the Democratic advisory committee, of which he is a member. Harrison said the Democrats would make such a, campaign, charging that Republicans are using certain non-political organizations, which he did not specify, in the South, as well as other parts of the country, to cause defection in Democratic ranks. Harrison did not outline the details of such a campaign, but he said southern headquarters were unnecessary. Coordination of the Democratic presidential and congressional campaigns throughout the country, with the aim of getting a “favorable” Congress if Smith is elected, was carried a step further today, with appointment of Senator Miilard E. ladings of Maryland, chairman of the senatorial campaign commitee, as director of the speakers’ bureau, With headquarters here.
