ENGINEERS TO PONDER SCHOOL LAW SQUABBLE Heating and Ventilating Devices to Be Studied at Meetings. Revision of the sanitary schoolhouse law, battleground of school board and tax board because of its heating and ventilating requirements, may be sought in the next Legislature, as the result of study by the Indianaoplis Engineering Society. Hearing manufacturers of heating and ventilating devices at their weekly meetings this month, members of the engineering society are trying to find unbiased answers to these questions: Is the existing law sensible? Is practicable? Is { ,rict r ..npliance pos'd’jle? If not, is it to be retained nevertheless for its educational results and as a goal to be as nearly achieved as possible, in view of local conditions? The public, the engineers believe, has been bewildered by the storms which .-aged here over schooi ventilating systems, the lightning now striking the school board, r*cxt the State tax board, or C. C. Sh pp, local manufacturer of direct, : ndirect v entilating systems, or riva' manufacturers. The law requires that 225 cubic feet of space shall be provided for each pupil in a school room; that ventilation shall be provide l furnishing 1,800 cubic feet of air each hour for each 225 cubic feet of space; that heating systems shall provide a temperature of 70 degrees, while maintaining a relative humidity of not less than 40 per cent. Doubt whether strict compliance

LADY UNDY TO GO WEST Trans-Atlantic Flier's Father Is Los Angeles Resident. BOSTON, July 13.—Amelia Earhart, “Lady Lindy” of the At-
lantic, will take a western trip before long and there’s a reason. Before her transAtlantic flight Miss Earhart had not seen her father, Edwin S. Earhart, for five years. He rejoiced in her success, however. He is a Los Angeles lawyer. Miss Earhart was born at Atchison, Kan.

with these requirements is “humanly possible” w-as expressed at Wednesday’s meeting by William E. Eldridge, engineer and contractor, who, with E. W. McCullough and Dan Luten, comprise the engineers’ committee sponsoring the investigation. “Catside temperatures, direction and velocity of the wind, humidity, loss of heat, all varying from day to day, are elements making it difficult, if possible, to meet all the re- 1 quirements,” he said. “It is humanly possible,” Lenten ! contended, “and I believe it can be complied with. A lack of funds prevents it here; the tax board won’t allow us the money.” Eldridge, who had mentioned that the law provides “arrest, fine and imprisonment” for violators, jokingly remarked: “Then perhaps they ought to arrest, fine and imprison the tax board.” Paul R. Jordan, manufacturer of gravity ventilating devices, at 631 S. Delaware St., first of the manufacturers to address the group, explained the type of exhaust equip- ' ment he makes and explained lab-

ratory tests to determine their efficiency. He declared his type of exhaust devices would meet requirements of the State law under normal conditions and with sufficient intake without necessitating opening of windows. His firm does not manufacture intake devices—the other factor in ventilating systems. Jordan said he believed ventilating manufacturers regarded the law as a standard they should try to attain, rather than one they must strictly abide by. He said its results had been beneficial and that “ventilating has been underdone, not overdone.” Dr. William F. King, secretary of the State board of health, charged with inspection of ventilating systems in the schools, and enforcement of the sanitary schoolhouse law, reminded the engineers that if a change is sought in the measure it should be with due regard for conditions throughout the State. “In larger cities, such as Indianapolis, it is necessary to protect children more closely against impure air,” he said, “than in smaller cities and rural cummunities, where the air is relatively free from impurities. It would be folly to compel installation of air washers in smaller places at a heavy financial burden. Shortage of funds wiuld prevent installation in 75 per cent of the schools in the State.” Difficulty of finding SIOO-a-month janitors capable of regulating air washers to maintain correct per cent of humidity also was discussed. “If there is to be revision of the law.” said Dr. King, guest of the society, "let it be by its friends and not by its enemies.” W. S. Boyle presided at the round table and annuonced E. E. Trickier, ventilating equipment manufacturer, would address the engineers on the “split system” at next Thursday’s luncheon. C. C. Shipp, manufacturer of the D-I system and around whose head had centreed the storm on ventilating requirements and installations here, will be heard one week from Thursday.

number present and twelve study Bibles to the church with the second largest percentage of its membership there. The meeting Thursday night was addressed by the Rev. Earl Wilfly, leader of the National City Church, now being built in Washington. He spoke on, “Foreward Movements of the Disciples of Christ,” before ae gathering of more than 1,200 persons. Mr. Wilfy pleaded for a unity of churches by the worship of the principles of Jesus Christ rather than creeds laid down by the mind of man. Mrs. Alice Scott, Wichita, Kan., spoke to more than 800 Christian Church women of Marion County on “The Lure of Love,” at the meeting held Thursday afternoon. She spoke on the changing status of women, due to their increased ventures into business. No service will be held Saturday night. A union Christian Endeavoi meeting will be held at 6:30 Sunday evening, at which Prof. Bruce Kershner, head of the College of Religion, Butler University, will speak. The women’s week program, which will begin July 29 at Bethany Park was announced. Morning and afternoon programs, under the auspices o? the Christian Women's Missionary Society of Indiana, will be conducted. ,
