SOCIALISTS MAY REMAINJN AIR Officials Believe VVEVD to Continue Broadcasting. Bn United Press 4 WASHINGTON, July 13. informed officials said today they believed radio station WEVD, operated in New York in memory of Eugene V. Debs, would be permitted to continue broadcasting. . WEVD is one of 164 smaller stations which the Federal radio commission has treatened to close unless they can show their continued operation is in the public interest. Norman Thomas, Socialist candidate for President, and others, have fought in the station's behalf, declaring the issue concerned the right of free speech by radio. They are believed to have won, although the commission has given no formal decision. The commission will devote another week to completing its hearings on 107 stations which protested the order, and after that will probably announce a number of reallocations, to allow some of the successful smaller stations to continue without interfering with other stations. It is believed that perhaps thirty to fifty of the 164 stations will be relicensed shortly before Aug. 1. HELD ON RUM CHARGE Charged with possession and sale of liquor, Robert Ballinger, Sixteenth St. and Arlington Ave., was bound over to the Federal grand jury Thursday after a hearing before John W. Kern. He was released on $2,500 bond. Two ten-gallon kegs of whisky, another keg half-full, three pints and two half pints were said to have been confiscated at Ballinger’s home. Mrs. Susan Ballinger was charged with operating a blind tiger.
