HALLGREN United Press Staff orrespondent WASHINGTON, July 7.—Military aviation soon may come into its own as an independent factor in the national defense scheme of the United States. Although the plan advocated by Brig. Gen. William Mitchell for a separate aeronautical department continues to face strong opposition, it was learned at the War Department today that serious consideration is being given a proposal t divorce the air corps from the Army. The movement is said to have been stimulated by the unprecedented progress in military aviation the last two years. Under the suggested arrangement, the air corps still would be. technically at least, under the War Department’s jurisdiction and would continue to cooperate with the other combat units of the Army, although the corps would have no dir:ct relations with the Army. The corps would have its own auxiliary services, including quartermaster, engineering and similar units, and would have virtually complete control over its own affairs. Aviation officers are laying the "paper” groundwork for the anticipated change, although without specific authority to do so, the United Press is informed. PACIFIC COAST GETS CONTESTS IN TYPING World’s Champion Will Be Named in Events Sept. 29. B v Vnited Press NEW YORK, July 7.—The twentythird annual international typewriting contest to determine newworld champion typists in the professional, amateur and school novice classes will be held at Sacramento, Calif., on Sept. 29. It is the first time since the inauguration that the fixture has been scheduled for the Pacific Coast. The State contests conducted throughout the country the past six months to determine the various State representatives at the International Contest in California have just been completed. More than seventy young men and women will be officially entered either as State representatives for their territory or as individual entrants for competition in the school novice championship. Bn United Prei t* Dessau, Germany, July 7.—The Junkers pilots, Risticz and Zimmerman, still were in the air this morning in their attempt to establish a new endurance record. At 10 a. m. they had been in the air 53% hours. At 2:41 p. m. today they will equal the record of Majors Arturo Ferrarin and Carlo Del Pret —The Italian fliers, who just flew from Rome to Brazil of remaining in the air 58 hours and 37 mintes. If they remain in the air until 3:41 p. m. They will establish anew record. Risticz and Zimmerman encountered severe rain storms Friday night and they departed from their set course of Leipsic to Dessau. Later they returned when the storm subsided. Risticz, with an aid, formerly held the endurance record. This record of more than 52 hours was broken by the American Eddie Stinson and Capt. George Haldeman. STATE SHIELDS GYPS lES Michigan Attorney General Rules Rovers Cannot Be Evicted Bp United Press TRAVERSE CITY, Mich., July 7. —Gypsy bands may establish a home in . Michigan anywhere they please and for as long as they please if they mind their own business, as the result of an opinion handed down recently by the attorney general of Michigan. It has been custormary for years to order gypsies to move on as soon as they showed a desire to pitch camp in this vicinity. When that was tried this year the nomads produced copies of the opinion and defied local officers to evict them.

NEW RADIO LAUNCHED 100 Dealers Hear Details of Philco Set. The new Philco Electric radio receiver manufactured by the Philadelphia Storage Battery Company of Philadelphia, Pa., was introduced to 100 Indiana dealers at a luncheon at the Lincoln Friday. Robert Herr, company service engineer, explained the circuit of the new receiver as being an application of the new Neu-trodyne-Plus principal.

—Aviation— FIRST WEEK OF AIR TOUR WILL ENDJONIGHT Twenty-Three Planes to Reach San Antonio; Next Week Strenuous. Tin United Pres a FT. WORTH, Texas, July 7. Twenty-thres airplanes of the national air tour continued westward today with a nonstop scheduled at San Antonio. Today’s flights will complete the first week of the tour. The planes have covered nearly one-fourth cf their scheduled 6.300-mile tour. Next week’s rchedule is the most strenuous of the tour, calling for flying every day with the exception of Friday, when the tour will rest in Los Angeles. The caravan will leave San Antonio Monday morning, and will continue to Marfa, El Paso. Tucson, Yuma, San Diego and Los Angeles before reaching San Frajicisco a week from tonight.
