TOMBOY BUILDS RACE BOATS TO BEAT_AMERIGA Marion Carstairs, British Girl, Hopes to Speed at 100-Mile Clip. BY ROBERT C. DOWSON United Press Staff Correspondent LONDON, July 6.—A speed of 100 miles an hour may be reached by a British motor boat during the races for the British International Trophy at Detroit in September. With this aim in view Miss Marlon Barbara Carstairs, famous British speed-boat enthusiast, has had two new racing boats built. In both of them the Napier Lion engine, which was responsible for Britain’s Schneider cup jictory and Captain Campbell’s automobile record, is the principal feature. Named After Mother Both boats, Estelle I and Estelle 11, have been named after Miss Carstairs’ American mother, formerly Estelle Bostwick of New York. Os different size and design, the speedy craft are expected to give the world record figures on the water. But they are not Miss Carstairs' trump card. The boats will be tested on the great expanse of fresh water on Lake Windermere, in Westmoreland. Will Drive It Herself Miss Carstairs will be at the wheel of the boats during their trials, and will study the functions of every part of them. Then a third boat, Estelle 111, will be built, embodying all the best points in Estelle I and Estelle 11. In this way Miss Carstairs hopes to produce the world’s fastest speed-boat, which she intends to drive herself in the International T.ophy races. All three boats are entered for the trophy, Estelle I and Estelle II being piloted by men. Miss Carstairs’ mechanic during the races will be her inseparable racing companion, Joe Harris, a sturdy old salt type of British sailor, who has accompanied her in all her races.
