DEATH VALLEY FARM ATTRACTS TOURISTTRADE Furnace Creek Ranch, 200 Feet Below Sea Grows Date Trees. IIyNEA Service BARSTOW, Calif., July 6.—Probably the most lonely and isolated “farm” in America is Furnace Creek Ranch, 147 miles north of here. This small acreage sits like a greeen egg in the heart of Death Valley, the lowest, dryest and hottest part of the continent. At this oasis, alfalfa was once grown for mules engaged in hauling borax from the mountains to civilization. Some of the old freight wagons still may be seen at ths ranch, with other reminders of old times. Now there are many date trees under cultivation. Tamarack trees are numerous. The ranch serves a

usefufl purpose as a stopping place for tourists who are invading Death Valley since trails officially havi, been marked through the sand and salt. The driving to the ranch from here, one man at Cave Springs and the men engaged in borax mining at Ryan are the only human beings one will meet. Travelers known to be en route and failing to show up on time have relief cars sent after them, for people might die of thirst in case of engine trouble. Water is almost as scarce on the mountain trail to Ryan as in Death Valley itself. Furnace Creek ranch is nearly 200 feet below sea level and the thermometer in summer registers from 120 up in the shade, but the men on the place manage to keep guineas and chickens there. They say that the temperature in the summer in the cellar ranges as high as 90 in the shade, so that eggs will almost hatch without the aid of incubator or hen. In the winter, the cold winds and snow often blow down the mountains and it becomnes extremely cold. Death Valley is over 120 miles long and about twenty-five miles wide. In its whole extent, Furnace Creek ranch is the only inhabitable spot. But Victor Ceballos, the ranch manager, says the lure of the desert 1
