SSOO Ringer Negro Puts Up Diamond as Security on Car; Wins Race.
WILLIAM JEFFRIES, Negro, Chicago, owed his victory in the 100-mile automobile race at the State fairground Wednesday to his diamond ring—one of thuse mean sparkling babies about the size of a button radish. Jeffries went to the fairground early Wednesday afternoon to find Deputy Sheriff Charles Mann and W. B. Dickson guarding his Frontenac race car. They held attachment papers from Municipal Court 1. Louis Chevrolet, race car builder, had unkindly alleged that Jeffries had overlooked the little formality of settling a $250 note and a repair bill for $154.58, incurred two years ago. Chevrolet asked SSOO judgment. The deputies were deaf to Jefries’ pleas that his car be released, at least while the race was run. Then Sheriff Omer Hawkins appeared. He agreed to take other security. Jeffries remembered his diamond. Hawkins passed the ring around to several persons in the audience, including Police Chief Claude M. Worley. It was appraised at from SI,OOO to $3,000. So Hawkins took the ring. The race got under way at 5 p. m., instead of 2:30, as scheduled. Jeffries kept a heavy foot on the gas and won. First prize was SSOO. Sheriff Hawkins still has the ring pending court action. Funeral Directors W. T. BLASENOYM Main office. 2226 Shelby St. Drexel 2570. FINN BROS. FUNERAL HOME 1639 N. MERIDIAN.
