'FIRST YEAR OF COLLEGE ‘FREAK’ COURSE ENDED Men Students Segregated for Term at Wisconsin in Unique Course. MADISON, Wis., June 29.—You could easily pick them out anywhere on the campus—Dr. MeikleJohn’s experimental college boys—because they all wore blazers trimmed in pearl gray and bearing the emblem of the sacred Athenian, owl. , One hundred twenty of them offered themselves readily for the experiment. And was the experiment a success? It is too soon to tell, declares Dr. Alexander Meiklejohn, its planner and founder, but the students are enthusiastic. They feel that they have had a wonderful year. All men—the students were segregated from the other undergrads and lived with their instructors In one dormitory. During this first year they have studied, from the ground up, the civilization of Athens in the fifth century, B. C. Give Greek Plays History, philosophy, literature, ’'architecture, law, economics, religion—all these subjects, with strenuous reading schedules, thousands of discussions and many original papers. They gave two Greek plays—“ The Clouds,’’ by Aristophanes, and “Electra,” by Euripides. Dr. Meiklejohn, remembered as the liberal who had to resign as president of Amherst in 1923 because the regents of that university preferred more cut-and-dried ideas than those of this untrammeled philosopher, long has felt that if a student thoroughly could master one civilization, he could deal intelligently with any othei civilization, any other problem. Dreamily recounting this idea to President Glenn Frank one day, he was startled to hear the president say, “Why not try it out?” Given Chance for Test With some trepidation, but with more of enthusiasm and elation, Dr. Meiklejohn prepared to do so. Critics of the college declare that the students in Meiklejohn’s experimental college seem to be more serious and absorbed than any observed elsewhere, either here or Abroad. The sophomore year of these boys j will be given over to a study of civilization in the United States. One hundred twenty-five new freshmen will enter the college this fall. Course Buns Two Years In the junior year the students will enter regular Junior courses with other students, whose first two . years have been spent in the con • ■rentional manner, and will proceed Bo the gaining of their bachelor dewith no time lost. In the meantime, Dr. Glenn Frank, president of the university is requiring all entering freshmen this fall to matriculate three to four days in advance of all other undergraduates, in order that more time may be given to advising each individual student about his future , career. LEAP YEAR BRIDE HELD ON CHARGE OF FORGERY I South Bend Prisoner Accused of I Paying Fee With Bad Check. ) By Times Special - SOUTH BEND, Ind., June 29. Mrs. Mabel Thomas, 27, who became a bride through a leap year proposal and is alleged to have forged a check to pay for a marriage license, will be tried here Saturday on a forgery charge. After a quarrel with Edward Moore, her husband of three weeks, in a hotel at Toledo, Ohio, he locked her in a room and went out for a walk, leaving her “to cool off.” She called hotel detectives, who released her and to them she volunteered the information that she forged the check. At first unwilling to believe the bride’s story, the detectives confirmed it on a phone call to local police, and Mrs. Thomas was returned here for trial.
