STOCK STUTZ SETS RECORD IN STIFF TEST Finishes Second in Hard French 24-Hour Grind at Le Mans. The sturdiness and stamina of the splendid Stutz again was demonstrated in the famous 24-hour race at Le Mans, France, which was concluded Sunday, June 17, according to word received at the Stutz factory. E. H. Brisson, behind the wheel of a Stutz two-passenger Black Hawk, won second place, finishing just one lap behind one of the Bentley cars, engineered especially for the Le Mans contest. The Stutz Black Hawk broke the previous track record and made the fastest lap during the race. This car was purchased by Brisson at the time of the New York automobile show in January. The 24-hour race at Le Mans is reputed to offer the most gruelling test of an automobile of any similar event in the world. The course is ten and one-quarter miles long, three miles of which must be driven in second gear. A steep grade of 200 yards makes it hecessary to use the low gear and two very sharp turns require excessive use of brakes. The winding road and bad turns act as a severe test for both car and driver. The rules specify that a car cannot stop for any reason without being disqualified. “While our factory is not engaged in racing,” said Frederick E. Moskovics, Stutz president, “we naturally are pleased to learn of Mr. Brisson’s success at Le Mans. The Black Hawk used in the contest was purchased dutrfhg the New York automobile show last January and as far as we know was a 'stock car, the same as those we are building in Indianapolis every day. “The only interest we have ever had in racing was to be enabled to improve our passener car as a result of the lessons we learned on the Speedway. The success at Le Mans is further evidence of the safety and stamina of our product.” ‘CANNONBALL’ HONORED Famous Cross-Country Driver Tells of Record Run. "E. G. (Cannonball) Baker, famous cross-country automobile driver, was honored by twenty friends and associates at dinner Tuesday night at the Columbia Club. The affair was sponsored by F. E. Hunter, vice president of the Hutchison Automobile Company, local Franklin dealers. Baker told of his record breakinground trip continental run. The Franklin Airman in which he made the trip will be on display today and Thursday at the Hutchison Automobile Company, 2330 N. Meridian St. Fred Garrett, Baker’s mechanic, and also an Indianapolis man, was the guest of honor at the dinner.

A measuring bottle of one gallon capacity is connected to the fuel line. Vacuum tank and carburetor are drained. Then the line is opened to the carburetor and the fuel flows directly from the bottle. Thus the drivefc has all the facts of fuel consumption “right in his lap.” Tests have shown Hudson averagmg fifteen to eighteen miles a gallon, Essex models correspondingly more. Distributors and dealers of the Hudson Motor Car Company in various parts of the country now are operating this interesting device on the dash of the car. This allows the driver or prospective buyer of a Hudson or Essex car to see the actual rate of gasbline flow as he drives.
WHIPPET SETS NEW STANDARD Expect Other Light Sixes to Follow Example. The outstanding performance of the new Whippet Six, which was introduced a short time ago by the Willys-Overland Company at the lowest price ever reached by any manufacturer of light sixes, may result in anew and higher standard of design for cars of this type, according to men who are in close touch with affairs of the automobile industry. Equipped with a seven-bearing crankshaft and other distinctive features that are new to cars selling in this low price field, it is said that other manufacturers of light sixes, because of the unusual high performance rating of the new Whippet Six, may be forced to adopt the same features first introduced in the Whippet. It is said that the new Whippet Six, although it has been on the market but a few months, has established an unusual reputation for
'HUDSON On the Open Road great performance ® is Master Indeed !
Its performance has centered on Hudson the most dramatic public interest ever extended any car. Thousands, riding daily, are carrying the story world-wide. 1 They tell us that they travel faster in city traffic, because of flashing getaway, swift, smooth acceleration arid instantaneous control that easy steering and four-wheel braking give. / This extra range and activity of Hudson power, as everyone knows, are advantages exclusive to the Super-Six principle and to its companion invention on which patents recently were granted. In every phase of performance there is effortless ease, from its smooth, swift getaway, to sustained high speed, and back to the soft instantaneous stopping action of its four-wheel brakes. Power is so smoothly delivered in all ranges of performance that you are scarcely conscious of it. With the development and increased capacity of the SuperSix principle came also the creation of a chassis engineered in every detail to provide safely,- continuously and economically for the speed, power and safety of the motor. A thrill, never to be forgotten, is in store for you when you take your first ride in the new Hudson Super-Six. *1250 UP 118-inch Chauis _ . ..... smooth and quiet action as well as a car of power, speed and remarkable acceleration qualities. This is claimed to be due to the sevenbearing crankshaft, full force feed lubrication, silent timing chain and the use of invar-strut pistons. The introduction of the new Whippet Six was preceded by a test of these cars over a period of nearly a year. During this period-'the Whippet Six was subjected to every known motor test under every condition in various sections of the country. Sale of the new Whippet Six Is said to be in such large volume that the Toledo manufacturer undoubtedly will set anew high mark in 1928 which will be as outstanding as the record sales now being established in the Whippet Four line. Proper Inflation Aids Driving Tire inflation has a marked influence on ease of steering and brake equalization. Oldsmobile engineers report. They advise that tires be checked weekly, so that correct pressure is maintained. Rear Vision Adds Safety Clear vision of the rear road is an important safety factor, and for that reason Oldsmobile closed cars are designed with wide rear windows.

MODERN NOTE STRUCK IN CAR BODY DESIGNS
Straight Line and Geometric Pattern Vogue in Autos as in Furniture. “Body designers and artists in interior decoration who have been called in by leading motor car manufacturers to lend their assistance in developing new types of fittings and new elements in upholstery are adopting a modified form of the modernistic treatment which has been in vogue among the leading furniture designers and interior decorators during the last three years," says Charys Weiman, who has just returned from an extended trip through the design shops of Europe. “An entirely new note is being sounded by better known European designers which will eventually result in a fresh school of design.
“In home furnishings, the geo- . metric design has been adopted by all of the leading furniture and interior decoration stylists. The old idea of adapting ‘period’ treatments to modern requirements has been discarded. Many of the new results are highly pleasing. “Such a personal thing as a motor car must be expected to share in the use of this new style treatment. Among American built motor cars there is already evidence of its effect. “Lower bodies on motor cars are an expression of the low lines which are characteristic of modem furniture. The gradual elimination of j curves in favor of the more modern i

use of angular geometric forms in radiator design, In body contours and in door moldings are distinct forward steps. “By comparison with modem treatments, the old coach forms, which are like old Chippendale, Empire and other period furniture styles, begin to look ‘fussy’ and antiquated.
“Just as Duncan Fyfe introduced straight lines and compact effects into furniture design in the early American period, the modernistic motor car designs are being brought out in a style which is simple and characteristically beautiful.
“The rather severe lines of the radiator shell, the straight, right angle at the cowls, the compact lines of -the body roof and the straight lines of the doors which have curves only'to accommodate the rear fenders, are in harmony with the new elements of furniture design. “One may readily imagine Duncan Fyfe picking out_jme of the more modernistic cars if he were alive today to choose an automobile. . “And it is rumored that one of the American fine car makers has sounded a distinctly new note in a line of inclosed cars now under construction; something more ir the modern manner than anything yet attempted. "This is as it should be, for it Is reasonable to expect America to lead
