ONCE RULER IN . HUNGARY, BELA KUN FACES JAIL Post-War Dictator Falls Into Austrian Hands; Held as Red. BY MILTON BRONNER NEA Service Writer LONDON, June 26.—8e1a Kun once sat cross-legged on a bench and plied a needle, sewing pants. Then he plied a pen and wrote impertinent messages to the great powers of Europe. Once he ruled the state of Hungary. Now he is in a Vienna prison cell, his one crumb of comfort the assurance that he doesn’t have to go back to Hungary to be shot or hanged. Once by a wave of his hand he sent dozens of men to prison. Now he faces a prison sentence hipself. Today, after many years of freedom and revolutionary activity in Soviet land, Kun is in the hands of the Austrian police, who caught him slinking around in the streets of Vienna. Faces Three Charges He soon is to be tried in the Austrian courts on three charges: Conspiracy by forming a secret society in Austria and communicating with secret societies abroad. False registration. Returning to Austria without permission afterj expulsion. Revolution 1 broke out in Hungary and a people's republic had been proclaimed with Count Karolyi as provisional president. Karolyi finally resigned. In the chaos that ensued, the Budapest Workmen's Council formed anew Soviet government, and Bela Kun, the little tailor, who had the gift of gab. became its head. Flees to Vienna Then the Rumanian army made a steady advance tward Budapest, i

Kun resigned and fled to Vienna. On demand of the allies he was expelled from there in July, 1920. He was allowed to go to Russia, where he was given various jobs. When arrested in Vienna, Hungary demanded his extradition to answer for crimes under the Red Terror. Austria promptly refused. Therefore, the worst that he faces is a term in prison for violations of Austrian law, and then deportation. TROUSERS FOR WOMEN Britain Girl Athletes Adopt Flannels While Waiting Their Event. Bn Vnited Press LONDON, June 2T. —British women athletes are now wearing the trousers, formerly exclusively worn by the' male section of the sporting ranks. The big flannel slacks and sweaters, used for keeping the competitor warm during the waiting periods between heats or events at athletic meets, can now be seen proteettog almost every female athlete on British tracks. The popularity of the trousers among the women is due to the fulllength leg covering provided compared with the scant protection given by a mackintosh or coat.

initiative bond issue to be placed on the November ballot calling for the expenditure of $40,000,000 for a great, broad highway to be called "The California Fast Highway.” II will go as the crow flies from hc,c down the west side of the San Joaquin Valley, tapping rich dairy and oil country. It will be 400 miles long and sixty feet wide. In the center of the road will be a ten-foot parking space, and each fifteen-foot space adjoining the center core will be reserved for the speed demons. There will be no speed law and the rule will be: “Let ’er go the limit.” All grade crossings will be eliminated and curves will be as few as possible. The auto trip to Los Angeles bycoast or Inland route now is an ordeal for a single day’s travel, and most travelers take it in two hops. With the speedway built, however, the trip can be made easily in eight hours or less averaging only fifty miles an hour.
