CHILD HEALTH WEEKPLANNED Lectures, Clinics Scheduled at Winona. Plans have been completed for the annual child health week program at the Winona Lake Chautauqua, July 9-13, the State board of health announced today. Examinations of pre-school children will be held every forenoon and exhibits showing best methods of health protection will be demonstrated. Dr. Ada E. Schweitzer, chief of the child health division, will givfe daily lectures on child hygiene. She will be assisted by Dr. Apolina Wilson. Under the title of “Fears and Defense Reactions,” fears of children will be discussed Tuesday and proper training outlined. “The Child and His World” will be discussed by lecture by Dr. Schweitzer, Tuesday afternoon. Physical, mental and temperamental defects and their relations to each other will be discussed by Dr. Wilson Wednesday. Problems of the delinquent child and home environment, will be discussed Thursday and Friday.

Charles Shepherd is back in Redkey, his home town, after spending twenty-six of his sixtyfive years in the Indiana State prison and hopes to resume his trade as a barber after he learns to bob women’s hair, a fashion that was not in vogue when he became a convict. Convicted of slaying his wife during a drunken quarrel in 1902, Shepherd received a life sentence, but is now free on a ninety-day parole, which the prison board announces it plans to make permanent. Shepherd marvels at the changes here during the years he spent in prison. The town hitchrack and horses and buggies are missed most, Shepherd says. The odor of cloves kills microbes in thirty-five minutes, while typhoid fever bacteria are killed by essence of cinnamon in twelve minutes. ,

POLICE THWART PLOTOF GANG Save Grand Jury Witness From Kidnaping. By United Press CHICAGO, June 22. Chicago gangsters, dismayed by a special grand jury’s underworld investigation, rose with anew challenge to the law Thursday night. Five men, armed with shotguns, drove up to the home of James Huff, the grand jury’s chief witness in the Granady murder case, and tried to force an entrance, apparently with the purpose of kidnapping Huff. The arrival of police on the scene thwarted the gunmen, and they fled. Huff, a negro, was in the same car with Granady when the latter, a candidate for ward committeeman, was shot to death on primary election day. He identified Johnny Armondo, a worker for Morris Eller, Granady’s opponent, 'as the slayer, and was scheduled to appear again today to give further testimony. The attack was the second within three days. A similar one last Wednesday night also was foiled by police.
