40 MILLIONS IN 1929 TO BACK 1 VOLSTEAD ACT Will Wood of Indiana Has Estimate Ready for Next Year. Bn Times Special WASHINGTON, June 22.—Prohibition enforcement will cost the Treasury a sum close to $40,000,000 in the fiscal year 1929. The only official figures as to the dry budget are those prepared by Representative Wood of Indiana, acting chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, who estimated the cost at $36,000,00G. Certain authorities here assert that Wood is a little short in his figures, due to his failure to take into consideration the amounts expended for enforcement by the Customs Service. On the face of the appropriation bills passed at the last session of Congress, dry law appropriations were made available as follows: Prohibition Bureau, $12,729,140; Coast Guard, $15,064,930; Department of Justice, about $9,000,000; total, $36,794,070. Fctf the current year the direct dry appropriations were in excess of $37,000,000. The figures showing the cost of additions in the Prohibition Bureau are exact; those for the Coast Guard are estimated, and the same is true of those for the Department of Justice. Nevertheless, experts say that these estimates are substantially correct. The appropriation for the Customs Service in the new fiscal year is in excess of $18,000,000. Just how much of it will be used for dry law work is not known. The amount allowed for the Prohibition Bureau in the new appropr.ition act is about $600,000 less than the amount authorized for the current year. This reduction was effected in part through the action of the bureau in turning over some ! of its patrol work, especially on the Canadian border, to agents of the Customs Service.

Fahey” charged Serving with reckless driving speeding and driving on the wrong side of the street. THREE ARE WARNED ON BLIND TIGER CHARGES Warnings and suspended sentences on blind tiger charges were given Elmer Marone, 1236 Olive St.; Walter Dufek, 1220 Naomi St., and Carl Fletcher by Municipal Judge Paul C. Wetter today. The three told the judge they found liquor in a pitcher on a table in a deserted tin shop at 1006 Virginia Ave. A man named Biggs, connected with the shop, had told them to drop in and have a drink, they said Biggs wasnt there, but they found the liquor and helped themselves. Wetter placed them on probation under SIOO fines and sixty-day State Farm sentences. He ordered Marone to get a job in fifteen days to support his wife and children, and Fletcher to find steady work to support an aged mother, within thirty days. _
