Schopp Launches Move to Obtain National Public Links Tourney (or Indianapolis Next Season Supervisor of Local Municipal Golf Hopes to Land Important Event; Entries Sought Here for 1928 Meet at Philadelphia.
BY DICK MILLER Harry Schopp, supervisor of golf tot the city municipal courses, today launched plans toward landing the eighth annual amateur public links championship tournament of the U. S. G. A. for Indianapolis at South Grove course in 1929. Schopp recently was named district represetative to take care of entries in this section this year, for the seventh annual meet. It will be held July 31, Aug. 1,2, 3 and 4 at Cobb’s Creek municipal course in Philadelphia. Harry hopes to land the big event for Indianapolis next year and thereby bring to this city national golf recognition due the six beautiful municipal courses. a a a Entry fee to the 1928 championship event is $5. It should be mailed to Schopp who will send it to the tournament committee. There will be a public links champion crowned, also a winning team named. Each club may enter six players, but only four of them maj compete as a team. The names of the team players must be submitted before play starts Aug. 1. tt tt tt hold a competititve lest to determine the ones to represent the cly courses at the meet. A thirty-six-hole tournament for that purpose is advised, to be held the week of July 2. Schopp has not stated whether such competition wil be required here as no local municipal course has more than six players to go. Such events need to be stimulated in this city and 6chopp is starting the ball rolling. tt tt tt The Jaackson sisters. Alexa and Minnetta, were guests of Harry for a round of golf at South Grove. A fast game is expected Sunday when the Indianapolis Keystones meet the Rural Red Sox at the Marion County Green House park at 2:30 p. m. (c.s.t.). Red Sox have been playing good road ball this season and have defeated some of the State's fastest teams. Hoosier A. B. C.s will hold a special meeting tonight at the home of the manager and all players are requested to be present by 8:30. Those unable to attend are requested to get in touch with the manager before Saturday. Mrs. C. C. Bowers of South Grove took her golf sticks along to South Bend this week to play over Erskine Park and Chain-O’-Lakes courses. Mrs. Bowers will find the sponge-like fairways much different than the local courses. tt tt tt The Peoria and Eastern Athletic Assocition will hold its intra-association meet next Sunday at South Grove. Indianapolis Cubs will play the Brookside A. A.s Sunday at Rhoaius No. 2, at 3 p. m. Russell Paugh and John Smith form the Cubs’ battery. Cubs practice at Rhodius Friday at 5:30. Indianapolis Y. M. S. claim a 5-to-4 victory over the Indianapolis Cubs, in eleven innings. Y. M. S. claim that Beck's steal of home in the eleventh Inning was legitimate. Y. M. S. will meet the St. Patricks Sunday at Garfield No. 3 at 3 p. m. Indianapolis Cubs’ manager alleges that the Y. M. S. did not win the game, but the contest ended in a 4-all tie. The Cub’s manager claims that the 6 o'clock closing law put a halt to the game in the eleventh with a Y. M. S. runner on third base and that the runner came home after the game had been called. .
