HARMON SALES AND PRODUCTION PASS W TOTAL Now Leads Whole Industry in Manufacture of Straight Eights. Production and sales of Marmon straight eights this year have mounted, month by month, to so great an extent that the total output in the first five months of the year was equal to the entire production in 1927. Likewise, the company’s activities since the Marmon “68” and “78” were introduced to the public early this year have expanded to the point where Marmon now leads the entire industry in the manufacture of straight-eight automobiles. Sales, Units Boom These facts were announced by H. H. Brooks, general sales director of the Marmon Motor Car Company, in a statement reviewing the company’s business from Jan. 1 to June 1 of this year, in which he reported that sales of Marmon straighteights are maintaining a volume more than 100 per cent greater than last year. In 1927 the company first entered into the manufacture of straighteights and established the highest record in its history, not only in the number of units sold at retail but in total volume of business. The new records are the result of the rapid growth in the popularity of the straight-eight type of motor car, now available to all classes of automobile buyers, and the remarkable increase in the Marmon distributor and dealer organization which has increased 110 per cent so far this year, Brooks said. The company has retail sales outlets in practically'every community in the United States and is represented in forty-eight foreign countries. Foreign Sales Increase Inasmuch as Brooks’ statement was issued as of June 1 it does not include production and sales in the month of June, one of the heaviest buying periods of the year. Marmon production, therefore, reached last year’s total, even though the second quarter of the year has not yet ended. June sales are showing an increase over last year that corresponds to the gains made in the other months of the year, it is reported. One of the highlights of Mar-! mon’s 1928 record has been the increase in export sales, revealing that motorists in Europe and other foreign countries are turning toward the American type of straight-eight. The gain in Marmon foreign sales is even greater than the increase in domestic business sales abroad this year averaging 300 per cent ahead of last year at this time.
TOURIST INFLUX RAISES CANADA ROAD COSTS Record Tear of Traffio From U. S. Expected. MONTREAL, June 20.—Reports from all provinces received by the Canadian Good Roads Association indicate that higher expenditures will be made this year on Canadian highways than during any past year in their history. The great increase in motor traffic in Canada, combined with the annual summer influx of motorists from the United States, are causes behind the increased expenditure on highways. Last year the enormous total of 3,153,800 automobiles entered Canada from the United States for touring purposes and is expected the motor tourist traffic from the south this year will break all records. Thick In California With 1,770,838 automobiles in the state, California has two cars to every five persons, according to the California State Automobile Association. U. S- Cars Popular World consumption of United States automobiles increased 40 per cent in March over February this year.

BY SWEDE SWANSON School is out and the children are back on the streets. The summer spirit is in them and their youthful caperings are hard to control. Along with this freedom, to make matters worse for safety, is the increased travel of summer. Put both together and we have a dangerous situation, provided we can cope with it properly. Schools provide playgrounds in summer to offset the dangers of the streets. Cities rope off play streets to keep the motor car from disturbing the youngsters. Yet we can’t force the children to the playgrounds or into the roped areas. There’s always some child that will dart off the sidewalk for a ball, regardless of approaching cars. And we can’t expect them to think first, in the excitement of their games. It is for us, therefore, to think and be cautious for the children.

We must always be on the alert, especially while driving along home streets. We must always have our cars under control and be ready to stop at short notice. We are older, more mature than the children. Let us be careful first. Let us not depend on the youngsters. n tt a Much carburetor trouble today is a result of that instrument getting air bound. Without sufficient air the gas mixture is entirely too rich for firing when the engine is recranked after it has been running hot. To shift gears quietly the following pointers are given by the engineering departmnt of the AC Spark Plug Company: Be sure that the clutch entirely disengages when the clutch pedal is depressed.
