EARTH LEANS TOWARD SUN; j SUMMER NEAR Spring of 1928 Will Be Thing of Past Thursday P Morning. Bv Science Service WASHINGTON, June 19.—Thursday morning, June 21, at 11:07 a. m. Eastern Standard Time, the spring of 1928 will be a thing of the past. Summer will begin at that moment, according to the calculations of astronomers here at the Nautical Almanac office of the Navy Department. At that time the sun, in its wanderings, reaches the zodiacal sign of Cancer, the crab. Also, at that time, it reaches the tropic of Cancer, when it is farthest north, and then starts southward again. But to the ordinary person, or even to the as.tronomer, there is no visible change in the sun at the time. Due to Earth’s Motion The changes in the sun’s position, by which the seasons are dated, are really due to the earth’s motion, and the sun itself has nothing to do with it. The sun remains unconcernedly at the center of the solar system, the earth revolves around it once in a year along the pat-h called the orbit of the earth. But the earth’s axis is inclined to the plane of its orbit. That is, if one imagines the sun on a flat table, and the earth revolving around it in its orbit, also on the table, the axis, or the line around which the earth turns in its daily rotation, is not perpendicular to the table. Instead, it is inclined from the perpendicular, or “straight up,” by an an angle of twenty-three and onehalf degrees. Leans Toward Sun The result is that at certain times of the year, as now, the north pole leans towards the. sun, and the northern hemisphere gets the greatest sunshine, and we have summer. If the axis were not at such an angle, there would be no change in season. Every part of the earth would have the same season always. Six months later the north pole leans away from the sun, the northern hemisphere receives less heat and light from the sun, and winter is the result. Because the south pole is towards the sun when the north pole is tilted away, the seasons in the southern hemisphere are just the opposite of those in the northern. When the sun enters Cancer next Thursday, it, therefore, will be the beginning of winter for people in New Zealand and Australia, Farm Work Leaders Meet By United Press LAFAYETTE, Ind., June 19.Leaders of county and community farm programs were gathered at Purdue University here today for the annual meeting of county agricultural agents and teachers of vocational agriculture.
