PHYSICIANS OF COUNTRY MEET IN CONVENTION 6,000 Will Attend Annual Meeting of Medical Association. By Science Service MINNEAPOLIS, Minn., June 11.— The medical profession of America will be concentrated here this week when 6,000 doctors come to the annual meeting of the American Medical Association at which medical advances of the past year will be reported. An official welcome to Minneapolis will be given the organization by Gov. Theodore Christianson on Tuesday evening, June 12, when the only general assembly of the physicians will take place. At this time, also, Dr. William Sidney Thayer of Baltimore will be installed as the new president of the association, which now numbers 96,443 members, an increase of 2,191 over last year, according to a report to be made by Dr. Olin West, secretary and general manager. On Wednesday night the eight scientific sections go into session. At these meetings the leading authorities and investigators of the country in medical science will announce and discuss the latest discoveries and methods in treating the sick. An outstanding feature of the scientific exhibit, which this year will be the largest of its kind ever assembled, will be the exhibit showing the laboratory methods now used by physicians in diagnosis. This exhibit is in charge of Dr. V. C. Myers, professor of biochemistry at Western Reserve University, Cleveland. For the first time, also, there will be an exhibit by the section on diseases of children, which will show studies on vitamins and milk as applied to infant feeding. Plastic surgery 'will be illustrated with models, photographs and artificial parts from civil and military practice. A marked decline in the number of irregular medical schools, including chiropractic, osteopathy, naturopathy, will be reported by the council on medical education and hospitals. Sixty Join K. of C. By Times Special CONNERSVILLE, Ind., June 11.— Sixty men became members of the Knights of Columbus here Sunday during a district meeting, were conferred by teams from Indianapolis, Richmond and Rushville. Other cities represented at the meeting were Shelbyvilie, Connersville, Greensburg and Brookville.
He Couldn’t Sleep Stomach Hurt So Back Ached for Ye* rs. Finally Found Belief. Perfectly Well Now. Friends of Mr. Henry Remillard, 294 N. Dearborn St., Bradley, 111., were recently surprised by his sudden return to good health. He explains it as follows: “For many years I had chronic indigestion and for the last six months I never knew what it was to have a good night’s sleep, my stomach hurt so. I had gas and biliious attacks whenever I tried to eat, and my heart palpitated so I could hardly breathe. My kidneys were weak, and I had terrible headaches and pains in my back. I was constipated, felt tired and worn-out all the time, and was absolutely discouraged. But anew hope came to me the day I started taking Viuna. It promptly gave me the help I needed, and today I can hardly realize that I was ever so sick. M£ stomach never gives me a moment of trouble, and sound sleep is surely a blessed relief. The gas pains, biliousness, and shortness of breath are all gone. I am rid of the headaches and back-ache, and feeling splendid in every way. I owe my" health to Viuna, and can never hope to praise it enough.” Viuna nets promptly 5n alngglak oowels, lazy liver and weak kidneys. It purifies the blood, clears the skin, restores appetite and digestion, and brings new strength and energy to the whole body. Take a bottle on trial. Then If you re not glad you tried Viuna, your money will be refunded. $1 at druggists, or mailed postpaid by Iceland Medicine Cos., Indianapolis, Ina* / VI-U N A The Wonder Medicine

WHAT HAS HAPPENED VIRGINIA BREWSTER, after losing both father and wealth, consent. to make her home with CLARISSA DEAN and her father. DEAN plots to separaee her from her fiance, NATHANIEL DANN, but fails and later is forced to pay blackmail to a MRS. PARLEY or face a scandal. CLARISSA becomes jealous of VIRGINIA resolves to leave, but DEAN insists that she marry him. When she refuses, he threatens to reveal the fact that her father cheated him out of SIOO,OOO in a bootlegging deal. Recklessly, she promises to earn enough to repay him in one year—or marry him. .VIRGINIA leaves but has to pawn a ring to tide over until she can find a position. She foes to NIEL’S studio but her joy at seeing him is clouded because she dare not reveal her promise to DEAN, and also because of the familiarity with which his model CHIRI, treats NIEL. seeks work through an agency but without success. One evening she finds * h " hotel from DEAN and rm^7fc how . he , *! lr P* d her address, coming home from dining out with NIEL one night. NOW GO ON WITH THE STORY CHAPTER XXX recognized the man * instantly. It was the same figure she had seen step hastily back into the shadows when she and Nathinel were taking a taxicab from the Russian restaurant, and now she knew where she had first seen him. He was the man on the bus! The man whose behavior had puzzled her. She remembered how silently he had come down the steps in her wake on that occasion, how he had slipped quickly away when she had chanced to turn and find him directly behind her. And now here he was. Virginia was certain he had not been invited. “He’s spying on me,” she told herself furiously, back In her room. Her fury was not for the man who had shadowed her, however. It burned hot against the person she believed had employed him. “So that’s how he knew where to send the orchids!” she cried, thinking of Frederick Dean. “And he was the one who went to Mrs. Phelps. I’m sure of it!” She was glad that she had not attempted to find a position under an assumed name. If Frederick Dean had set himself to hound her, or interfer. he could have made it very unpleasant for her in that case. As it was she had an answer. She was fighting, face to the world, and she vowed silently that never, no matter what the outcome, should Frederick Dean hear her whimper. Later she was to be even better pleased because the newspaper stories brought her many opportunities that otherwise would not have come to her. First of all, old friends came forth with offers of a home, and Virginia found great difficulty in refusing them. One by one they ceased to importune her as her “perfectly insane” firmness made Itself felt and they were thus compelled to take her seriously. Then the offer. of positions of all kinds began to pour in on her and Virginia soon learned how valuable her name was. She could sell it for large sums If she wished, and in regard to one or two proposals she wondered if she should not accept. But a consultation with Mr. Gardiner put an end to her Interest in these. He warned her that unscrupulous persons could make dishonest use of the prestige that attached to the name. Virginia, In fear of this, promptly turned all offers to pay for the use of the Brewster name. But the estate was still unsettled and investigation had shown that most of the offers of employment that were made to her were figments of some imaginative person’s brain or else they required experience such as she did not possess. Some of them she might have been tempted to take had they come to Viola Browne, but she felt en-

couraged to wait Just a little longer and see if something more to her liking would not turn up. She had gone through the storm, squirmed under the spotlight, and if anything good could come from it Virginia felt entitled to hold back for it. She was pretty sure of getting a job now, and although she was still living on the money she had raised at “Uncle Simon’s,” and her personal belongings were gradually disappearing from her room, she had received an unexpected boon as a result of the attentions of the press. She had gone to the hotel manager and explained that she must have a cheaper room or leave the hotel. Her circumstances were fairly well known to the world at large by this time and Virginia had no need to keep up a false appearance. The manager very genially assured her that he could not afford to lose her patronage and Virginia was told that if she would stay and pay for her room she might appear as often as she liked in the dining room as a guest of the management. Naturally Virginia was inclined to refuse, but when it was explained to her that the hotel would consider itself well repaid she consented to think It over. She had been adamant in turning dowfi all offers that smacked of charity but this was a business proposition. And while it did not please her to think of adorning the public dining room as an object of curiosity, it helped her morale to know that she had, even if not by her own efforts, earned her board. Still she Insisted upon a cheaper room and got one without a private bath. Now if she got so low in funds she had to accept the freedom of the dining room at least it would not be because of extravagant room rent, she prided herself as she packed her things for the j transfer. When It was made and she was settled in the cramped new quar- j ters she realized that, for the first, time in many days, there was a lull in her affair - . It gave her time to think of Oliver and wonder if he had any news for her. Miss Evans had telephoned several times to say he wanted to see her, but Virginia had questioned her sufficiently to make sure that it was not important and had not gone down. Now she decided to finish up the day with a visit to Wall Street. Oliver professed great surprise at seeing her and chided her with neglecting him. “But I’ve been faithful Just the same,” he rattled on disarmingly, seeking to cover his eagerness. He hoped she would not see how glad he was that she had come in. “Have you made any headway?” she questioned without attempting to dissemble her true interest. “Lots. You’ll be rich in a few months, Virginia.” Virginia drew in her breath slowly and her eyes lighted up like stars. “I’ll never be able to thank you," she breathed intensely. “Nothing to that,” he assured her. “But if you want to do something

for a real blue guy come out to dinner with me tonight." “Oh, I’m sorry,” Virginia cried with genuine regret. “I always have dinner with Niel—Mr. Dann.” “Your boy friend huh? Well, It was you who talked gratitude, you know. I never think about the damned thing.” Virginia glanced at him keenly. He did look awfully depressed and tired. “Isn’t Jeanie back from Aiken yet?” she asked sympathetically. Oliver nodded glumly. “Back and off to the Riviera. Long Island next. That s my season.” Virginia bit her lip In distress. She smarted a little under the thought that he deemed her insincere in her protestation of gratitude. Perhaps she ought to dine with him .... surely Nathaniel would understand! She forgot that she hadn’t told Nathaniel anything about Oliver—afraid of his love-inspired questioning. “I’ll telephone Niel,” she said impulsively. Oliver found a polite excuse to leave the office while she made the call. Nathaniel rebelled against breaking their standing dinner engagement, but Virginia explained that she wanted to spend the evening with a friend who really needed her companionship. “Well, don’t I need It?” Nathaniel grumbled. “Are you going to be in your studio?” Virginia came back, meaning to say she would drop in some time after dinner if he were. But Nathaniel was disgruntled. "I don’t know,” he said shortly and Virginia’s temper flared up a bit too. Avery little, but enough to check her premise to pay him a visit. “Chiri’s spilling a spaghetti feed,” he went on. “If you’re throwing me down I’ll go over there.” He did not mean it as a threat; rather a plain statement of intention such as he might have made to anyone. To Virginia, however, it seemed that he was holding Chiri’s invitation over her head as the price of her final decision. Two bright red spots glowed in her cheeks and quick, angry tears stung her eyes. Had he chosen to name Chiri purposely? Did he guess that she verged on jealousy of the girl? Virginia had no time then to decide whether it was Chiri’s invitation or Chiri herself that he was

using to bargain with her. Well, if he hoped to fan her jealousy, she would give him no satisfaction. “Then I’ll see you tomorrow,” she said pleasantly. “Have a good time.” She banged the receiver on the hook with an emphasis that belied the sweet tones of her voice. When Oliver came back she was powdering her nose with vigorous rapidity. There were no signs, beyond the dash of fire in her eyes, that she was disturbed. That dinner with Oliver was the only one Virginia had had since she left the Deans that was perfect in every respect so far as food and service were concerned. But it seemed that the black cloud of trouble that had settled over her would not lift long enough to permit her to enjoy it. The entire evening was clouded with remorse over her hasty words with Nathaniel when he mentioned Chiri. She knew, now that she was calmer, that he could not have been capable of tormenting her with anything calculated to arouse her jealousy even if he possessed her secret. Virginia rebuked herself harshly for having imputed such a contemptible design to him. But in coming to this view and exonerating Nathaniel of one fault she still charged him with another. He had shown her that if she chose to dine with someone else he would go out and enjoy himself just the same, she believed. Her pride rebelled at the thought that he would try to pique her into doing as he wished. “He ought to know that I’d be with him if I could always do as I like,” she thought vexedly. • “What’s the matter?" It will be easjr for you.” (To Be Continued) NO ONE KNEW GOFF Senator From West Virginia Fools Photographers. By Times Special KANSAS CITY, June 11.—Senator Goff of West Virginia, “favorite son” candidate of his State for the presidential nomination, Is a small and somewhat unimpressive looking man. A score of photogi aphers, few of whom knew him by sight, were waiting at the Union Station, when he came in Sunday. But off the train at the same time came a big, suave looking person—probably an alternate delegate. The photographers dashed after the big man, and before he realized it he was surrounded, posed and photographed. Then some who knew Goff saw him departing and stopped him. But the photographer had the argument of his life to convince his fellows that the little man from West Virginia was really the presidential candidate.
