FIRE CHIEF AT KOKOMO HELD IN LIQUOR QUIZ Works Board and Department Member Also Accused. It>l Time * Special KOKOMO, Ind., June 6.—This city’s fire chief, John Aspy; George Gibbs, works board member, and Lloyd Morgan, fireman, today arc under bond for hearings Monday in the court of Edmond Jeffries, justice of the peace, charged with dry law violations. Each is accussed of illegal possession of liquor and in addition, Morgan faces a transporting charge. Arrests followeS issuance of warrants by Justice Jeffries. Aspy and Gibbs gave bond of $750 each and Morgan, $1,750. N Affidavits were filed following charges by Charles Etchison, discharged fireman, in a suit to be reinstated. He declared fire stations were scenes of drinking parties, and that on one occasion Aspy, while playing cards with Mayor S. E. Spur jeon, was drunk. It was also charged that Gibbs broke a liquor bottle while at the central fire station. Etchison asserted Morgan was the fire department bootlegger. He said Morgan ran liquor from Lafayette, using a north side fire station here as a storage place. Chief Aspy asserts Etchison was discharged for insulting a woman. But Etchison and his attorney advance a political “frame up” as the cause. O. C. Phillips, Etchison's lawyer, charges threats have been made to run his client out of Kokomo, if he persisted in pressing his case. Prosecutor. Homer R. Miller of Howard County, candidate for circuit judge, as a Democrat as is Justice Jeffries. Mayor Spurgeon, Chief Aspy and Gibbs are Republicans. Political foes have accused Miller of making capital out of the fire department probe in the interests of his candidacy for judge. TREES ARE SACRIFICED TO WIDEN DELAWARE Hewn on Both Sides of Street for Resurfacing Work. Deforestation of N. Delaware St., from Ft. Wayne Ave. to Sixteenth St. is now under way. Trees, young and old, are being slaughtered by an army of workers. While many of the older residents of the district are mourning the loss of their trees, they agree with board of works members that the sacrifice is worthwhile. For contracts have been let by the city for widening the 'street and resurfacing with asphalt. The trees are being hewn down on both sides of the street between j the walks • and the curbing, j Wherever possible they are being saved, but most of them will have to go to make way for the improvement. Similar sacrifice was made on Meridian St. when it was widened between Fall Creek and Maple Rd. THELMA KINNAMAN TO CHURCH GROUP POST * \ Elect Secretary of Young People’s Religious Council. Miss Thelma Kinnaman was elected secretary of the Marion County Young People’s Council of Religious Education at the Y. M. C. A. Tuesday evening. She fills the vacancy caused by the resignation of Miss Katherine McClure. Miss Myrtle Gummel was elected to serve with George Gesler, president of the council, on the advisory board of Young People, recently organized by Dr. E. N. Evans, of the church federation. Emphasis was placed on the importance of sending in money for scholarships to Young People’s camps to be held this summer at Lake Wabee and Lake Geneva. Plans were formulated to send a good representation to the State conference, June 19, 20 and 21, at Logansport. YOUTH IS DEFENDED County School Heads Hear Talk at Conference. “Morals of the present generation are no worse than those of the past. We may think morals are lower today, but that is because we older people have poor memories for the thing we want to forget,” W. W. Charters, Chicago University, declared in an address to ninety-two county school superintendents in the House of Representatives Tuesday. W. O. Schaunlaub, Kentland, was elected president of the County Superintendent’s Association at the closing business session of the conference. He succeeds W. Hemmer, Evansville.
