STUTZ SAFETY SLASHES HATE OF INSURANCE Cost at Lloyds Only Half for Other Cars Due to Devices. While the importance of safety in an automobile cannot bt> measured in dollars and cents, there is a yardstick —and a highly scientific one—for determining the value of safety and the relative safety of different makes of cars. This yardstick, a dollars and certs one, is figured at the desks of insurance actuaries, and the results of their calculations find their way in the computation of insurance premiums. Stutz owners pay only half as much as owners of other motor cars for protection by Lloyd’s of London, the largest insurance carriers in the world. And in addition premiums on other insurable items are cut 20 to 33 1-3 per cent. Safety Devices Cited In the words of the policy, “because of low center of gravity, hydraulic four-wheel brakes, safety glass, ‘side bumpers’, exceedingly rigid frame and other safety features of the Stutz automobile, further reductions are given as follows: 50 per cent for accident to owner c? guests, 331-3 per cent for glass breakage, and 20 per cent for accidental collision or upset, bodily injury or death, and damage to the property of others.” Further credit of 25 per cent is granted on theft, robbery and pilferage rates “because of Fedco system of theft prevention and detection, including Services of Burns International Detective Agency.” Indorsement Significant “Conservative and sure though a bank may be—and nine people out of ten think of a bank first when they think of security—the fact remains that an insurance company fs run on the surest, least speculative basis in the world,” says F. E. Moskovics, president of the Stutz Motor Car Company. “The words ‘actuary’ and ‘mortality tables’ were conceived and developed by insurance companies. They base their entire costs of today by the experience of what they did yesterday or last year. “When a great company like Lloyd’s of London recognizes Stutz safety features by allowing sharp reductions in premium rates all along the line because of these features, their value is self evident.” NEW HIGH JOETpEAK MADE BY OLDSMOBILE Pay Rolls of Plants Now Reaches Total of 6,235.6 Anew high employment peak has been reached this month by Oldsmobile. The combined pay rolls of the Oldsmobile factories and the Fisher body plant, located on Oldsmobile property and devoted exclusively to the manufacture of Oldsmobile closed bodies, now totals 6,235. This is the largest number of em r ployes engaged in the manufacture of Oldsmobiles during the more than thirty years continuous production by this veteran company. In addition to employing a record number of persons, more than a third of the Oldsmobile employes are working from two to three hours a day overtime. These include the motor plant, axle division, sheet metal and, in fact, practically all manufacturing and inspection departments. One department, the enameling, is working double shifts.

BY SWEDE SWANSON Out of the 22,000,000 automobiles on our highways, according to the American Automobile Association, only a little more than a million have properly adjusted headlights. Here is an appalling indictment against the American motorist for his negligence of one of the most important safety factors in motoring. Even more than negligence, there is an apparent indifference to this subject of driving. Who of us, when buying anew car, ever think of testing our headlights in the process of inspection before the purchase? A daylight drive up a steep hill and the car is either bought or rejected. The lights must take care of themselves. Yet they, above all things on the car, need adjustment and focusing ever so often, because the road’s unevenness jars them out of true. The A. A. A. is in the midst of a campaign to have motorists focus and adjust their headlamps. Do this tonight. It is a simple operation—merely the turn of a screw in back of each lamp for focusing, and tilting of each lamp up or down for adjustment. Properly adjusted headlamps mean

safe night driving not only for yourself but for all others. It is a matter of courtesy besides the ever essential factor of safety. Motorists who are electricians enough to know that negative cur- 1 rent is the oijo invariably grounded are sometimes surprised to find that the positive terminal of the storage battery of their car is grounded to the frame. This is possible because the “ground” of an automobile is something of a private one. The metallic parts are insulated from the true ground represented by the earth by reason of the rubber tires. Either the positive or negative sides of the battery may be grounded to the frame. But if the positive is used instead of the negative, as is more common, it is im-
