ARMY CAMPS TO BE OPENED' / FORJEGROES Military Training Site for This Area Expected to j Be at Ft. Harrison. ‘ Young Negro men of Indianapolis will be given their first military training this summer at camps to be established by the Government, according to reports received here by leaders in the movement. Included in this group young men will be accepted from the States of Illinois, Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana, which comprise the fifth corps area of the military training department. It is said there will be camps e ablished for these men in other areas, each of which to accommodate up to 1,000 entrants. Assurances are given that the camp for this area will be at Ft. Benjamin Karrison. A popular note of satisfaction was evidenced among prominent Negroes of this city when the Government’s decision to op ep this camp was made known. Marcus Stewart, who has led the fight to bring the training camp to Indianapolis, said, “In sponsoring the movement to bring the C. M. T. C. to Indianapolis, I have realized that it means more mentally alert and physically fit young men of the future. Accommodations may be had for 1,000 citizens; we are authorized to organize them in units of 50 each.” Cooperation Pledged “It is a healthy sign for young men and the Government when they come together under such moral and cultural influences as these camps afford. “Y” is ready to cooperate with the Government in its plans,” declared F. E. De Frantz, executive secretary of the Colored Y. M. C. A. Dr. E. A. White, pastor of Simpson M. E. Church, said “Indianapolis Negroes should be proud of the Government’s program of building better citizenship, thereby making our young men more loyal and patriotic.” Dr. L. A. Lewis, deputy coroner, said “I believe anything that helps young men should receive the fullest cooperation of our group. Those who led in this fight should be highly commended.” Mathias Nolcox, principal of Crispus Attucks High School, said, “The acquisition of the C. M. T. C., serves to strengthen the forces that have been at work to make a more virile young manhood of the race. We now have twenty boys enrolled for this training. I am in full accord with the program.”
Expenses Paid By Government The training provides for a balanced program of activities, physical, social and spiritual. Attendance does not imply further military service. The Government trains the applicants for one month as a worthwhile investment. All food, clothing, medical and dental attention, and transportation to and from the camp will be given free to men qualified to enter. Those desiring to enter must be physically fit American citizens and of good moral character. Applicants must be past 17 years and not more than 24 years of age. A physical examination and inoculation and vaccination against typhoid, paratyphoid and smallpox are required. Those desiring further information address Marcus Stewart, 518 Indiana Ave. Commencement This Week Unusual activity is being manifested on the part of students and faculty in the first commencement exercises of the Crispus Attucks High School. One hundred and thirty-eight students are to be graduated with more than twenty listed on the honor roll. “As You Like It” will be presented by the English department in the auditorium tonight.
