COOLIDGE AND PERSHING HELP PEACE CAUSE Anti-War Speeches Hailec! by Kellogg as Aid to Treaties. BY MAURITZ A. HALLGREN United Press Staff Correspondent WASHINGTON, May 31.—President Cooiidge's Memorial day speech at Gettysburg and General Pershing’s address at Thiaucourt, France, "have immeasurably advanced the cause of world peace and contributed to the success of the renuncia-tion-of-war treaty negotiations,” State Department officials said to-, day. Secretary of State Kellogg was represented as “highly pleased” by Pershing’s tribute to the proposed anti-war pact. He feels, it was said, that the speech shows the military branch of the Government to be as much interested in renouncing war as is the State Department. Hopes for Peace In his speech at Gettysburg, President Coolidge referred to the manner in which the anti-war t#3a has been Indorsed by public opinion both here and abroad. “The governments themselves,” he said, “have approached the matter with an interest 'and a sympathy which is most encouraging.” Continuing, the President declared: “It is my earnest hope that success may crown the negotiations now in progress and that the ideals which have inspired the French minister of foreign affairs and the Secretary of State of the United States in their joint efforts to find a solution of the problem of peace may find a practical realization in the early making of a multi-lateral treaty Tmiting futuie resort to war.” Denounces War Addressing thousands of French j and American citizens gathered in j St. Mihiel cemetery at Thiaucourt, Pershing denounced the “falacious \ theory that war is an essential ’ element in the national policy of a government. “In order to make lasting peace still more probable,” he said, “there would appear to be no longer any reason why the leading civilized powers should not agree among themselves to the general principle of the elimination of war as an avowed instrument of national policy. Such an agreement would certainly meet universal approval among the peoples themselves. It need not interfere with the necessities of reasonable armaments or the fulfillment of consistent obligations.
