U. S. MONEY IN EUROPEGROWS Foreign Investments Better United States Creditor Position. r.>i l tilted Pres* WASHINGTON, May 28.—Foreign investments by Amerrms in 1927 improved the United States' creditor position by $671,000,000. according to final figures on the balance of international payments issued today by the Commerce Department. This total remains after deducting the huge “backwash” or total of alien investments here and payments to the United States. Foreign investments and repayments on previous loans totalled $977,000,000, and refunds, commission and discounts aggregated $373,000,000. Subtracting these foreign payments from the total American investments abroad for the year, $1,976,000,000, leaves the net amount of capital exported as only $671,000,000. Financial experts regard the large foreign investments here as a further indication that Europe is fast achieving economy stability and independence. In a foreword. Secretary Hoover points out, however, that the capacity of foreign people to purchase American goods, or repay obligations to the United States, is enhanced by about $900,000,000 through the $770,000,000 spent by United States tourists abroad, the $206,000,000 remitted by immigrants here to their relatives at home, the $43,000,000 American charitable contributions to foreign countries, and United States payments to other countries of $32,000,000 in freight charges. The report shows an increase of $302,000,000 in the United States favorable trade balance. Excess of merchandise exported over imports v.tis $680,000,000, as compared with a 1926 favorable balance of $373,000.000. France and Canada received more American tourist money than any other nations, with about $200,000,000 each. A total of $133,000,000 was spent by foreign tourists in this country.

ROBBERS GET $236 IM SECRET HIDING PLACE heaves 5206 in Checks Found in Updyke Auto Stockroom. Burglars, who evidently had discovered a hiding place for money used for more than a year, robbed the Updyke Automobile Company, 1013 N. Meridian St., of $236 during the week-end, Ed Small, manager, reported to police today. The safe being locked late in the afternoon, the office force has been hiding late receipts in a bin in the stock room for months, Small said. The cash and $206 in checks were in this bin when the place was locked Saturday night. The burglar or burglars, broke open the rear door and another between the office and stock room. The checks and empty money bag were found on the floor.
