HOOVER'S STATE CAMPAIGN COST SET AT549.009 Thurman’s Charges . of Huge Slush Fund Is Denied by Foellinger. ! BY ROSCOE B. FLEMING Times Staff Correspondent WASHINGTON, May 22—Receipts of the Herbert Hoover organization in Indiana were $53,706, putting the secretary’s national total at approximately $260,000. Indiana expenditures, were $49,722, leaving a cash balance* of $3,983. Newspaper advertising cost $14,893.35. These figures were given to the Senatorial campaign quiz committee today by Oscar F. Foellinger, head of the Hoover movement in Indiana. They dispose of the wild charges of M. Bert Thurman, manager for Senator James E. Watson in the recent Indiana contest, that the Hoover people spent SIOO,OOO in newspaper advertising alone. The Republican primary battle in Ohio cost about $111,418, the committee learned.
Ohio Cost Is Biggest The Wiftis or anti-Hoover expenses were placed at about $56,159 by Carmi Thompson. Willis’ campaign manager. Secretary Hoover’s Ohio campaign previously was estimated to have Cost $55,259. The Ohio battle cost represents the largest State expenditure so far recorded with the committee. Campaign expenditures so far revealed have been $355,171 by the Republicans and $140,668 by the Dernocra ts. Chairman Steiwar announced the committee will go to Indiana and Ciiio and possibly West Virginia next week to call scores of witnesses connected with the primary campaigns in those States. The committee desires to develop all the evidence about those primaries before the Kansas City convention, he said. - Jurney Is Witness Chesley W. Jurney, secretary of 'Senator Copeland (Dem.) New York, testified he had raised and spent $2,077.15, almost entirely in (Texas for furtherance of Governor (A! Smith’s campaign. Copeland gave SSOO to the fund and Jurney (Contributed the remainder, he said. Jurney said his Texas trip from Sept. 6 to Nov. 20, 1927, cost $1,280. He said he was a voter at Waco, Texas, and held poll tax No. 1 there. Among the large contributors to the Indiana Hoover campaign were: • M. L. I iiilrd Press EVANSVILLE, Ind., May 22.—A new controversy between Mayor ’Herbert Males and Police Chief Harry Anderson, who have been political rivals for several months, seemed in prospect today. new fight centered around the reinstatement of Patrolman Edward Anderson. The officer failed to report for duty on election day. Instead, he worked at the polls, but not in official capacity. It was charged the chief suspended him &nd last week-end the chief went ion a vacation. Returning, he found Patrolman (Anderson back on his beat. Chief Anderson declared that the piayor induced the safety board to reinstate the officer, but that as long as he is chief, Patrolman Anderson “will not work on the force.’’
