[The PASSING PROCESSION
BY 808 BATMAN WOULD you like to be an executioner—to send men and women, mostly men, to death with a touch of your hand on the electric switch? Surely not a pleasant task. Robert G. Elliott is official executioner for New York and three other
News of the Week Boiled Down
Eastern States. He doesn’t like his jolt, He kills by authority of the State, but he kills just as dead as any “SSO a murder” gunman. It isn’t a job which carries with it social prestige or the respect which goes to the mah w ohis doing his bit, no matter if it is only screwing bolts in the chassis of a Ford. But its wages make it possible for the official executioner and his family to eat. Elliott attempted to hide his-identity under the title of ‘‘Mr. X" when he was made New YoriT executioner. But it didn’ work. They found him out.
They bombed his home the other day. Elliott lias choked and burned to death more than 100 persons by authority of the State. Two of them were Sacco and Vanzetti. The friends of Sacco and Vanzetti, who believe those two died as martyrs to liberalism, are blamed for the bombing. ' - The bomb wrecked Elliot's home in New York City, broke windows for two blocks and blew members oof his family from their beds. And they had another bombing in Chicago. Two days after a jury of which he was a member had convicted Eugene (Red) McLaughlin of highway robbery, the home of Fred W. Eiche was bombed. It was Chicago Bomb No. 36 since Jan. 1. No one was killed. It tore a wall of the Eiche home away, though. Cost Eiche several thousand dollars. There are two things that you may be certain always play a prominent part in the news of the week, every week.
AVIATION HEADS LIST
Prohibition and aviation. Probably aviation comes first. The polar dirigible Italia made a sixty-eight-hour flight over the Arctic wastes about the’ north pole. Gen. Umberto Nobile, the commander, has announced he discovered no new land in the polar wastes. He plans to return to the pole proper Sunday. Detailed plans were announced by the Transcontinental Air Transport, Inc., for a forty-eight-hour airplane-railroad schedule to be put into effect soon between New York and Los Angeles. The fourteen-passenger planes of the company, with a scheduled speed of ninety miles an hour and a maximum speed of 120 miles an hour, are to tranesport the passengers during daylight and fast trains of the Sante Fe and Pennsylvania railroads are to carry the travelers at night.
BREMEN CREW HERE
The Bremen fliers, first to cross the Atlantic westward, continued their tour of the country and visited Indianapolis this week. It was an impromptu visit here, and although most of the usual official welcomers were on hand doing the usual thnigs, the city as a. whole didn’t get a chance to celebrate. The fliers were at Milwaukee and St. Louis before they came here, and flew to Detroit from here. At Detroit their plane developed motor trouble, first symptoms of which were apparent here, and the two German and Irish aviators resumed their tour of the country toward Boston by train. Under the subject of prohibition, a movement in Congress to curb the zeal of dry agents and coast guard officers to get their bootlegger or Whom they think is their bootlegger by the use of guns if necessary was the outstanding thing.
WOULD UNIFORM OFFICERS
It arose from the shooting, which probably will result in the blinding of Jacob D. Hanson, Elk official, by coast guardsmen near Buffalo. • .There was no liquor in Hanson’s i automobile. He refused to stop j when guardsmen commanded him ; to, thinking the officers were higli- .' daymen. Congressman Dempsey proposed j 'an appropriation of $50,000 to buy uniforms for all officers enforcing the dry laws along the border or In other out-of-the-way places so people may know whether men haling them are “breaking the law or enforcing it.” Federal Prohibition Commissioner Doran ordered drastic steps this week to curb druggists who sell non-alcoholic extracts which only need a shot or two of grain alcohol from the family bootlegger to make them a fair approximation of such pre-drouth beverages as gin, vermouth, apricot brandy and many others. But officials admitted that there ■were no legal steps possible to back up the drastic steps—only threats of loss of permits to handle medicinal liquors to those druggists who handle medicinal alcohol, or whisky. From Germany came a bit of news which offers the makings of a nice controversy.
Manjou Wed in Paris
Dr. Agnes Blum, after experiments with white rats, believes that fathers moderately addicted to alcohol, will have a majority of male children, while fathers who are totalabstainers will mostlikely populate the world pre-eminently with jgirls, the dispatches said. But other Qerman scientists said It isn’t so—that Dr. Blum’s results came only because of the characteristics of the aninjals she experi-, mented with, and that it doesn’t appl yto humans. At New York the sad waste of the “largest cocktail in the world” brought tears to the yes of yearners and- joy to the hearts of prohibitionists. The liner Munamar docked from the West Indies. A Federal dry agent inspecting the liner sought to slake his thirst with water, as all dry agents should,v but don’t, from a 1,000 gallon tank half full of rusty water. It tasted alcoholic, and it was discovered that 2,800 bottles of liquor had been hidden in the
The Whole World in Brief
tank under the water and had broken, mixing with the water to make the world's largest wasted cocktail.
Liquor to Determine Sex
The marriage of Adolphe Menjou j and Catherine Carver, American film stars, in Paris had a prohibition flavor too. The French, it seems, like Menjou had made quite a fuss about the matrimonial festivities. And immediately |he ceremony Menjou admitted ne had been terribly nervous throughout, so nervous that he wished he had a drink right then. Wonder if the W. C. T. U.’s will turn thumbs down on Menjou's pictures? The biggest event down at Washington this wek was the signature by President Coolidge of the $325,000,000 Jones-Reid flood control bill. The measure provides that amount to be spent by the Federal Government in the next ten years or so tc chain the mighty Mississippi which exhibited its might last year in a disastrous flood. The biggest political news of the week was Secretary of the Treasury Andrew Mellon’s statement: ‘‘Mr. Hoover seems to come closest to the standard that is set for this high office.” Political observers declared it meant that Herbert Hoover \is assured of the vote of the Pennsylvania delegation for the Republican nomination for President, unless by* some freak of fate President Coolidge should be drafted, and that the entire support of the Coolidge Administration forces will be thrown to Hoover in preference to any of the candidates who have come forward to date.

May 19.—The mystery surrounding the disappearance of 8-year-old John Pyrek today after a search for his body in the Chicago River failed to reveal any clew to his fate. Bruno Bogdon, 8, who told police three different versions of his playmate’s disappearance, was taken to the municipal psychopathic laboratory for mental tests, but was found normal. The expert who examined him believed Bruno’s latest story—that John fell in the river while fishing—was correct. The small boy first told police that John had been imprisoned by kidnapers in a box car, then said he had been buried under a huge pile of sand. When the sand pile was moved and no trace of the body found, Bruno switched to the drowning story. WINS YALE LATIN FUND V Ohio Youth Awarded Scholarship for Grades in Classes.
