HULL, DONAHEY RUNNING MATE CHOIOESFOR AL Democrats Must Name One or Other to Win Election, Observers Believe. By C. J. LILLEY WASHINGTON, May 18.—Democrats have two choices for vice president, according to political observers here. The first is a man with an outstanding dry record who can swing two border States and keep the South intact. The second is a dry from the farm belt who is known to be friendly to farm relief legislation. The situation in the Southeast is causing more and more concern in the party. If there is any bolt after A1 Smith’s nomination it will come from States like Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Mississippi, Georgia and even Texas. Opposition Grows Senator H. Thomas Heflin, who has beeft loudest in denunciation of Smith’s candidacy, has recently won an overwhelming victory in the Alabama primary. Not only is the delegation solidly anti-Smith, but the victory was far more complete than the returns indicated. W. A. Gunter, the Montgomery mayor who denounced Heflin so strongly hopelessly was outstripped by anti-Smith Democrats, and Walter Moore, Democratic National Committeman, was supplanted. There were so many anti-Smith delegates in the race that they reduced their own proportion of votes, but even then the Smith men could not win. The Alabama protest against Smith has strengthened the opposition in other Southeastern States. Tennessee two days later indorsed Representative Cordell Hull for president without making Smith a second choice as hadbeen anticipated by some. North and South Carolina are ready to forget Smith and back Hull while other dry States are becoming restless under the renewed enthusiasm. In making their selection for vice president, the Democrats will have to choose between placating the Southeast and attempting to cut Into the farm States. Woollen Mentioned Hull would not only cement the South, in the opinion of his supporters, but would swing over the border States as well. But Hull would not be any help in the farm belt as he was the only Tennessee Congressman to vote against the McNary-Haugen bill. Because of Hull’s attitude on farm relief, Governor Vic Donahey of Ohio looms larger. Donahey’s farm record is good, he is dry, and he has been able to carry Ohio. Evans Woollen, Indiana banker, and Representative W. A. Ayres of Kansas also are being spoken of as vice presidential possibilities.
OFFICIAL UNDER FIRE Anderson Pastor Charges Councilman Gets Drunk. By Times Special ANDERSON, Ind., May 18.—Demand that Dr. Mark J. Rozelle, city councilman, be ousted is made by the Rev. Owen A. Knox, crusading pastor of Grace Methodist Church; who charges the official becomes drunk during office hours. Hearing on the charge has been set for May 28. Dr. Rozelle in the meantime intends to remain a councilman, having ben advised by counsel not to resign. The Rev. Mr. Knox, whose activities have the support of the Anderson Ministerial Association, has a city detective bureau shake-up to his credit, but failed in efforts to prove that liquor was kept in the city garage and that drinking parties were held there. Some liquid seized in a raid on the garage was found on analysis to be near beer and automobile radiator alcohol.
ARGUMENT ON QUASHING Counsel for Shumaker and Gilliom Will Clash May 25. By Times Special SOUTH BEND, Ind., May 18.— Arguments on a motion to quash charges of corrupt practices act violation filed against E. S. Shumaker, Indiana Anti-Saloon League superintendent, will be made in St. Joseph Circuit Court here May 25, before Judge Cyrus E. Pattee. The dry leader was accused by Attorney General Arthur L. Gilliom shortly before the May 8 primary election. Ralph K. Kane will appear as counsel for Gilliom in the motion arguments. LIQUOR ‘BURNS’ SHOES Confiscated Moonshine Destroys Soles. SAN FRANCISCO, May 18.—" If it’d burn the soles off your shoes, what’d it do to your stomach?” That’s probably the reasoning that caused fifteen drinkers to take the pledge here rectnly—that and the demonstration of Officer Tod Davis. In spilling out ten gallons of confiscated "moon” Davis spilled some. According to sworn statements, the supposed liquor ate the soles off his shoes. MAYOR GETS ‘STEP IN’ Anonymous Gift Rouses Wrath of City Executive. PORT ARTHUR, May 18.—A little package all wrappe din tissue paper was presented to Maypr J. P. Logan recently. When unwrapped it revealed a flimsy silk step-in. The mayor is requesting the unknown donor to “step-in” his office for a "bawling out” or worse.
