OREGON THROWS VOTE SPOTLIGHT ON DEMOCRATS Four Candidates Vie for Ten Delegates: Hoover Is Unopposed. ' BY GEORGE D. CRISSEY L'niled Tress St-(T Correspondent PORTLAND, Ore, May 17.—A Xvalkaway lor the lone Republican will be offset Friday by a merry battle in Democratic ranks as Oregon voters go to the polls to express preference for party candidates in the State primary election. Herbert Hoover is the only Republican seeking presidential honors who is one the Oregon ballot. He was practically assured of the thirteen delegates as the only manner in which another name can now get on the ballot is for voters to write it in. Four Democrats are fighting it out f;r the ten delegates who will go to the national convention at Houston. Os these there are three noteworthy candidates. The fourth the Rev. Alfonzo Workman of Mis-\ souri, is receiving little consideration. Three Cornered Race Governor Alfred E. Smith of New' York, appeared to be the favorite as the polls opened. He is opposed by Senator James A. Reed of Missouri and Senator Thomas J. Walsh of Montana, with the dry Democrats backing the latter. A split delegation among these three was in prospect, although Walsh’s recent withdrawl left the situation muddled. That Hoover would sweep the State without opposition w'as considered a certainty by his supporters which includes the Republican organization. Hoover, “Native Son” He also has much popular strength and is classed as a “native son” became he was raised at Newberg, a Quaker settlement in the Williamette valley, and attended school there and at Salem. Democrats, however, waged a Warm campaign w'ith supporters of Governor Smith, led by Judge Will R. King, Democratic national committeeman. being opposed by Oswald West, former Governor anr national committee-man elect, and other dry champions of democracy.
