BANQUET WILL OPEN SPELLERS’ CAPITALPARTY .Tours, Visit With Coolidge Are on Program for National Bee. Bp Times Special LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 15.—A banquet will be the first big event for the boys and girls who will compete in the national spelling bee the week of May 22 in Washington, D. C., it was announced today by the director of the match. Spellers will be registered at the Hamilton Hotel, Fourteenth and K Sts., Washington, in time for the dinner, which will be at 6:30 p. m. Monday, May 21. A tour of the business and residential sections of Washington has been arranged for Tuesday morning. This trip will include a visit to the Lincoln memorial. President to Greet Party In the afternoon busses will take the spellers and their chaperons to the Natural History Bldg, for the National Spelling Bee finals. After the champion has been selected and the $2,500 prize money divided by the contestants, busses will take the spellers back to the hotel. Two theater parties have been planned. A tour of the interior of public buildings has been set for Thursday. This takes spellers to the Pan-American Bldg., Bureau of Printing and Engraving, National Museum, the Capitol, Congressional Library and to the White House. President Coolidge will meet the spellers Wednesday noon. Those contestants who have not been to Arlington may expect a treat Wednesday afternoon. Busses will take them through the Mt. Pleasant residential section, with a stop at the zoo. Through Georgetown, over the new Key bridge, spellers will go to the State of Virginia to see the Ft. Meyer reservation, the national cemetery, the old Lee mansion, the memorial amphitheater and the tomb of America’s unknown soldier. Will Visit Mt. Vernon Thursday morning offers a trip to Alexandria and Mount Vernon, the home of George Washington. This tour takes spellers across the Potomac Rivver to the Christ Church, where Washington worshiped in Alexandria. The Lincoln memorial, the Scottish Rite temple and the cathedral are on the afternoon itinerary for Thursday. Mount St. Albans, the Cathedral and the Zoological Park await the spellers on Friday morning. The final tour takes the party to the Franciscan Monastery and the Soldiers Home in the afternoon.

POOR SHOOTING SERVES TO PREVENT TRAGEDY Terre Haute Man Mistakes Messenger for Prowler. 7?,!/ United Press TERRE HAUTE, Ind„ May 15. Orville W. Bennett, through poor marksmanship, avoided a tragedy when he fired through a door of his home, at what he said he believed was an intruder, but missed. Frank Haverty, 20, a messenger boy, had inquired as to where Bennett lived so he could deliver a message. Upon being directed to the house, young Haverty stepped upon the pore hand knocked at the door. Suddenly a bullet came through the door and just missed the messenger’s head. Bennett explained to officers that he thought the messenger might have been a prowler.

STUDENTS QIVEN WORK Bureau at De Pauw Obtains Position in Various Lines. fill United Pres * GREENCASTLE, Ind., May 15. De Pauw University is one of the smallest schools in the country which conducts an active bureau of recommendation to obtain positions for its students. Prof. Oscar H. Williams, head of the education department, is director of bureau. Enrollment for bureau services includes 65 per cent of the graduating class, 52 alumni and several upper classmen. The bureau does not limit itself to such services as filling teaching vacancies. Recommendations for the year have been sent out in such branches as foreign trade and personnel work, advertising and general office duties. Twenty-eight business firms have written to DePauw suggesting their needs and requirements. INVITE CITY OFFICIALS _____ i Slack and Aids Will Attend Civic League Meeting. Mayor Slack and other city officials will take part in a meeting tonight of the Riverside Civic League at South Grove Club House, President James Bradford said today.
