WEEK MARKS TEN TEARS OF U. S. AIR MAIL 63 Cities Served by Kapid Countrv-Wide Network of Sky Lines. Ey JOSEPH S. W/.SNEY United Press Staff Correspondent WASHINGTON. May 14. - The United States today began celebrating “Air Mail Week" in commemoration of the tenth anniversary of using air service for the transportation of mail. Postmaster General New, in designating the week, said air mail service had expanded from a “crawling babe" until now sixtythree cities are served by the modern type of pony express. Air mail service was inaugurated between New York and Washington on May 15, 1918, but this route soon was abandoned because of the time lost between postoffices and flying fields.
Lines Privately Run “This experiment with plants and pilots borrowed from the War Department furnished the nucleus and the experience that later developed the trancontinental system and the widespread network of contract lines today,” New said. “Mail service between the coasts was operated both by plane and train. This service developed until in August, 1923, the great transcontinental service went into effect, bringing New York and San Francisco only about twenty-seven hours away by mail. “The next step was the establishment of an overnight service between New York and Chicago. Then when these two enterprises survived all tests and proved the feasibility of continuous transport by air over long distance without regard to darkness or ordinary adverse weather conditions, the government was ready to step out and let private initiative take over the new system it had developed." Maintain 22 Routes New pointed out there are now twenty-two routes in operation covering a total mileage <jf 9.916 miles. Every day mail pilots fly a distance of 22,110 miles, carrying an average of nearly 5.700 pounds. “Three other routes, already under contract, will add 1.705 miles to the system and four other routes, of 2,279 miles have been advertised,’ New said.
