CHILE INVENTOR MAKES PLANES ‘SAFEVAS CARS Perfects Extra Wing Device to Prevent TailSpins, Nose Dives. B.y United Press NEW YORK, May 11.—Alfred G. Leigh of Chile, has come to the United States to introduce a “foolproof” airplane stabilizer which he claims will make flying virtually as safe, popular and practical as riding in an automobile. Leigh says his invention will prevent nose-diving and spinningcauses of 95 per cent of airplane accidents; that it will improve the lift of a plane and make work of the pilot much easier. The inventor soon will confer with government officials concerning purchase of his patent rights for use of the stabilizer on United States army and navy planes. Shown to Curtiss Firm He has negotiated with the Curtiss Aeroplane Export Corporation. After demonstrations before officials of the corporation the company is preparing to make extensive tests of the application of the Leigh principle in its wnid tunnel. Simplicity and dependability are two features of the stabilizer. In principle it is the placing of a very narrow auxiliary wing or plane in front of the main wing or plane to prevent the center of air pressure from shifting suddenly about on the main wing, causing the plane to dive or spin. Because the narrow wing is stationary and no adjustments are necessary during flight, it is in operation at all times and therefore dependable, according to Leigh. Harnessing Lifting Force While other inventors were experimenting with gyroscopes and complicated instruments for stabilizing planes, Leigh, a former dentist determined to harness, as a safety device, the same force which lifted the plane. Leigh’s perfect stabilizer is the result of twenty years’ study and experiment. In 1908 the inventor began his research work at Santiago de Chile. For ten years he worked on his idea. In 1918 he came to the United States, applied for a patent on Sept. 18, 1918, and was granted the patent on Aug. 19, 1919. Ten Hours Instruction He predicted that within a few years practically all commercial and military planes would be equipped with the device, pointing out that a person would need only about ten hours instruction, in the air to be able to fly a plane safely with such a stabilizer, while now a person should have about 100 hours in the air. He said it would reduce the landing speed to thirty-flve miles an hour, thus permitting landing on smaller fields. RICH LONDONERS FIND JOBS AS BOOKMAKERS Society Men in New Roles Now Common Sights at Races. By United Press LONDON, May 11.—The society bookmaker is becoming a familiar figure at the fashionable race courses in England, and many young men prominent in the social register have adopted this means of earning a living. Shopkeeping as a means of increasing one’s income has become so popular among young women of fashion that society saleswomen no longer cause any surprise. A number of society men are also engaged in selling gramophones. The society bookmaker will not appear as a “check-suited hyena” of the trade, but will attend the races as an ordinary spectator and take betting cards from his friends. It is expected that his services will be welcomed by women at the races, who may place their bets quietly and in comfort.
