CURTIS AND EDGE LEAD FIELD FOR VICE PRESIDENT 'Choice of Hoover Running Mate Narrows; Fuller Mentioned. B 1 RAY TUCKER WASHINGTON, May 9. The prospect of a Hoover-Smith presidential battle has narrowed the Republican vice presidential race to virtually three men, in the opinion of many G. O. P. leaders. The trio most prominently mentioned because of the supplemental strength they would contribute tc a Hoover ticket opposed by Smith are Senator Curtis of Kansas, Senator Edge of New Jersey, and Governor Alvin T. Puller of Massachusetts. The latter’s chances are not so bright as they seemed a few months ago, but his friends are working hard for him. Farmers for Curtis Curtis’ claims for the vice presidential nomination rest in the belief he would aid the ticket in farm states, where Hoover is supposed to be weak. As Senate leader the Kansan has stood by the admin istration except for his support o; the McNary-Haugen measure. Thu is counted on to appeal to disgruntled agriculturists, and it is not held against him at the White House because of farm sentiment in his State. Edge's friends maintain he would bring more elements of strength to a Hoover-headed slate than anybody else, especially against Smith. They believe his wetness might help to keep New Jersey in the Republican column, and also win favor among wets in such Eastern States as Delaware, Maryland and Massachusetts. Moreover, it is pointed out that Edge would be perfectly satisfactory to certain financial interests staid to look askance at Hoover. In fact, Daniel Pomeroy, New Jersey national committeeman, has canvassed the Wall Street district and received a general O. K. for Edge The latter also is a party man, and his selection might reconcile oldline politicians supposedly cool to the cabinet member. Fuller Loses Strength As between Edge and Curtis, the choice might depend on whether party tacticians decided it was more vital to cater to the wet and conservative east or the discontented farmers. Puller’s vice presidential movement has lost some strength in the last few weeks, largely because of Edge’s growing prominence. The Bay State Governor's part in the Sacco-Vanzetti affair, the coolness between him and certain Administration representatives and his record of political irregularity are cited as arguments against his selection.

F,;i Science Service CHICAGO, May 9. —Children may have to welcome an undesired addition to the whooping cough and measles afflictions they have to undergo in the process of becoming grown up. Several cases of anew eruptive disease which does not fit into the category of either measles or German measles, though it resembles both, have broken out in Paris, according to reports received here from the French correspondent of the American Medical Association. “The fifth disease,” as French physicians have christened the new malady of children, does not provoke symptoms of a serious character though certain changes in the number of cells in the blood have been noted. Maory of the children who have “taken” the disease have histories of both types of measles and of scarlet fever. Blind Couple at Memorial P:) United Press DECATUR, Ind.. May 9.—A touching incident occurred here when a husband and his wife, both blind, who had been singing on the streets here, visited the memorial tablets to Gene Stratton Porter. The couple asked the Elephant Rock gardener to lead them to the tablet so that they might read it with their fingers. They recalled how they had read books of the late Mrs. Porter and enjoyed them because they had brought vividly to them the great out-doors.
