MOTOR BUSSES SET RECORD IN WESTWARD TRIP Highway Limiteds Go From St. Louis to Pacific in Four Days. This is the third of a series of articles by Catherine Woolley describing the luxuries of modern stage transportation over some of the country's most fascinating highways. By CATHERINE WOOLLEY Written Especially for NEA Service and The Times ALL records of motor stage travel were broken when a through all-year daily run was established last October between St. Louis and the Pacific coast, including both Los Angeles and San Diego. The stages make no night layovers. Passengers may stop, but the big coaches push on, following one of the far southern routes. The route penetrates the mining districts of Missouri and weaves through the Ozark mountains. It pierces the oil regions of pklahoma, follows the Rio Grande for a short distance, touches the Mexican border, and passing through the Salt river valley crosses the Colorado river at Yuma. Some of the chief towns it touches are: Springfield and Joplin. Mo.f Galena, Kas.; Oklahoma City, Okla.; Amarillo, Texas; Roswell, N. M.; El Paso, Texas; Douglas—where it touches the Mexican border—Bisbee, Tombstone, Tucson, Phoenix and Yuma, Ariz. The stage run from St. Louis to Los Angeles covers 2,343 miles and occupies four days and three and a half nights. Special sleeping chairs are provided, and between St. Louis and Oklahoma City lavatory-equipped stages operate. There are two main stage routes between Kansas City and Denver, and over them ply the big passenger stages of several companies. One route, beginning at Kansas City, runs through St. Joseph, Mo.; Wathena, Troy, Highland, Hiawatha and Reserve, Kas.; Falls City, Auburn, Nebraska City, Union, Lincoln, Hastings, Kearney and North Platte, Neb., and Sterling, Colo. Part of this route is the Old Oregon Trail, where the pioneers f ought Indians from their covered wagons. One important company hires married drivers who have had no previous stage experience, preferring to teach them its own methods. All drivers must be married and between 23 and 35. They must furnish bond and give a record of five years’ continuous employment. The second Kansas City-Denver route runs through northern Kansas along the Victory Highway— United States Highway No. 40. The distance between Kansas City and Denver is 650 miles and the time of the faster runs is about twenty-five hours. Between Denver and the Pacific coast there are two stage routes in summer. One runs from Denver to Laramie, Wyo„ and thence to Salt Lake City—mostly over the Lincoln Highway. At Salt Lake City, the route to the coast divides, the southern arm reaching down to Los Angeles and the other to San Francisco. The National Old Trails route does not pass through Denver, but the stages start from that city and reach the National Old Trails at Trinidad, Colo. Thence they climb over Raton Pass on a good road and follow the National Old Trails all the way through the vast Indian country. Next Story: Coach tours in the middle west.
