TRICK SLATES LITTERING CITY BAFFLE VOTERS Watson Camp Denies Rumor of Indorsements; Klan Sheets Appear. Enough paper to start furnace fires for all Indianapolis was distributed on front porches and at the polls today in the form of primary election slates. Following previous election maneuvers, so many slates were passed out that voters were bewildered and much of the effect of the trick was lost. Politicians were chiefly interested In the report that 27,000 slates were sent out from Watson-for-President headquarters last night. Watson forces have denied they were aligned with any particular local faction or any candidates for Governor or Senator—the Senator desiring to keep out of the bitter factional battles. Jewett’s Name Missing The slate credited to the Watson forces purported to give Watson’s indorsement to Frederick E. Schortemeier for Governor and Arthur R. Robinson for Senator. This surprised some because Charles E. Jewett has been heralded as the Eub-rosa choice of Watson for Governor. Others on this slate were: William T. Quillin for Congressman, Charles Mendenhall for prosecuter, Clyde E. Robinson for treas- ! urer, Oren E. Davis for sheriff, William D. Beanblossom for coroner, j Paul R. Brown for surveyor, John E. Shearer for commissioner, First District; George Snider, for commissioner, Second district. The Ku-Klux Klan slate made its appearance despite pre-election assertions of Klan leaders that they j had forsaken their usual tactics.! The slate was identified by a steel cotten pin, instead of the familiar ! clothespin, attached. Pin Marks Klan Slate , The indorsements on this slate, j on white paper with blue ink, headed “Protestant-American ticket,” j were in line with generally accepted j views of Klan affiliations of candidates. Those indorsed included Watson for President, Robinson for Sena- | tor, Schortemeier for Governor, j Ralph E. Updike for Congressman, i William H. Harrison for prosecutor, 1 Clyde E. Robinson or Frank Cones j for treasurer, Orin E. Davis or: George L. Winkler for sheriff, W. i D. Beanblossom for/coroner, Paul | R. Brown for surveyor, John E. S Shearer for commissioner, first dis- : trict, and Alonzo Jeffers or George i Snider for commissioner, second i district. Tom Peters, candidate for Democratic nomination for joint repre- j eentative of Marion and Johnson | Counties, and Louis Ludlow, Democratic congressional candidate, declared they had nothing to do with getting their names on the Klan elate. • Klan Names Democrats Among Democrats, the Klan slate also carried Olin R. Holt for Governor; Raymond F. Murray for prosecutor; Walter McCord for treasurer; Henry B. Steeg for surveyor; Joseph E. Wheatley for commissioner, first district, and James A. Kreglo for commissioner, second district. < The rival Coffin and Dodson organizations seeking to control the county Republican machinery, made extravagant use of slates, listing their favored precinct committeeman candidates with those candidates for other offices which they figured were 'strong in particular localities. The Democrats were not without their instances of slate trickery. Headquarters of Frank C. Dailey, candidate for Democratic nomination for Governor reported discovering that throughout the Ninth ward someone has distributed slates indorsing both Dailey and John E. Frederick for Governor and at the bottom carrying a list of State convention delegates headed “Myers and Dailey Delegates.” Then candidates for delegates listed, however, are those who will vote for Frederick and not Dailey in case no candidate gets a majority and the nomination is thrown into the State convention.
