TEACHER LOANS REPAID. STATES PRINCIPAL DUCK Replies to Criticisms From Accounts Board on Handling Funds. Steps to halt loaning of money to teachers from the Shortridge High School book exchange, criticised in a report Thursday by the State board •f accounts, already have been 4aken, Principal George Buck said today. Buck said he issued orders last fall, following a similar report by the accounts board, that no more loans were to be made. Since that time, a part of the money loaned has been repaid, he said. The principal defended the present system of handling funds of the book exchange and lunch room, declaring no radical change is necessary. Profits for The Echo “Profits from these two funds,” he said, “are used largely to defray deficits in the Shortridge Echo fund, which annually amount to $1,500 or $2,000. “If profits were turned over to the school board, we should have to ask the board to return most of it for the Echo deficit.” He added that if any loans had been made to teachers since the report last fall it had been without his knowledge. The fund is in the hands of G. M. Crossland, bookkeeper and manager of the exchange-, who is under SIO,OOO bond. $2,340 in Loans Repaid Os the $2,852.85 outstanding March 31 in loans to teachers, $2,340 was loaned to Crossland himself, the report showed. Buck said Crossland borrowed the money to finance building a home, and had been repaying it at the rate of S6O a month. Albert F. Walsman, school business director, will read the accounts
