OUTBREAK OF PARALYSIS !N FALLJEARED Dr. Flexner Sees Danger of Infantile Epidemic; Study Serums. BY MARJORIE MACD ILL Science Service Staff Writer WASHINGTON, May 4. Another infantile paralysis outbreak in the summer and autumn of 1928 was a possibility forecast today by Dr. Simon Flexner, director of the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research at the meeting of the Association of American Physicians. To prepare for this grave contingency, specialists of the research staff of the institute are hard at work endeavoring to find the most effective method of combating this dread disease with convalescent serum, the only specific known at the present time. Blood Serum Used The blood of persons who have liad infantile paralysis is known to posses the property of neutralizing to a certain extent the effect of the virus, and if administered early enough will mitigate the paralytic alter effects that make this disease so alarming to the parents of young children. In anticipation of another epidemic, some of the States hard hit by the epidemic last summer, notably California, have iftstitutud i what Dr. Flexner trgeed “revolving funds’’ to be used for collecting blood serum and to provide for its release to competent physicians. j Donors, who have recovered from the disease, will be paid for their } blood, while the proceeds from the 1 sale of the serum will be turned back into the fund. Experiment on Monkeys The point of the infantile paralysis experiments which are being carried out in the Rockefeller Institute laboratories with monkeys, | is to find out if it is sufficient to administer the serum directly into! the cerebro-spinal fluid by lumbar j puncture. The practice has been to inject it into the spinal cord and also into the veins or muscles. If the desired results can be obtained by using lumbar puncture alone, as the experiments at the present time seem to indicate, a great saving of the precious fluid [ will be effected by injecting it into ; the body system through only one j avenue instead of two.

BRAND WATSON TOOLOFDAWES Rail Unions Urge Indiana to Back Hoover. BY ROSCOE B. FLEMING WASHINGTON, May 4.—Chiefs of the railroad brotherhoods appealed to their members in Indiana to support Herbert Hoover because they consider him fair to organized labor, and because they regard Senator James E. Watson as a stalking-horse for Charles D. Dawes, labor's enemy. This is the explanation of the brotherhoods’ activity in Hoover’s behalf made in the current issue of Labor, the organ of the railroad workers. Labor says it believes Dawes has from the first been a candidate for President, and encouraged certain favorite sons, Watson among them, to enter the race to hold their delegations for him. The big Hoover majority in Ohio, it was said, delivered a serious blow to Dawes’ aspirations. “The voters in Indiana have a chance to finish the job,” argues Labor. “If Dawes is beaten vi Indiana he is through. Watson Basn’t the ghost of a chance for the nomination, but is just a stalking-horse. If Watson wins, Dawes will be a serious contender.”
