FLOQO,FARM BILLS PREPARED FOR (MAKE Congress Rushes Work on Two Measures to Send to President. BY THOMAS L. STOKES % United Press Special Correspondent WASHINGTON, April 30.--Con-gress this week will prepare two measures—flood control and farm relief—for presentation to President Coolidge, who lias criticised both of them. Leaders expect his veto ot the McNary-Haugen farm aid measure but hope the flood bill as it conies liom the conference which began today will be sufficiently acceptable to receive the President’s signature. Speed Final Action Pinal congressional action is ex- j pected this week on the Jones-Reid I flood bill. The ten conferees of j House and Senate will seek to ad- | just differences as early as possible. Their work must be confirmed by j both bodies before the measure can j be sent to the White House. Final action on the farm relief | bill is doubtful. Several hours of j debate are left in the House. The measure - should be passed by the middle or last part of the week, as it is the plan to have night sessions to speed up consideration. The bill will then have to go to conference to adjust differences between the Haugen measure of the House and the McNary bill approved by the Senate a few weeks ago. Presidential politics has been injected into debate on both the farm and flood measures.
See Effect on Hoover The charge has been made several times that the main purpose •in pressing the McNary-Haugen legislation again in face of the President’s open and continued disapproval, is to make political capital for the Lowden and Dawes movements among the farmers, and at the same time to embarrass the candidacy of Secretary of Commerce Hoover, who opposes the McNaryHaugen bill. Political observers also have speculated upon the effect a flood bill veto might have upon the Hoover, candidacy, Since Hoover won consierable favor last spring by his relief work in the flood-stricken areas.
