REED SCOFFS AT REPORTS OF AL'S STRENfiTH Denies Smith Nomination by Acclamation or That It Is Assured. BY RAY TUCKER WASHINGTON, April 20. A sharp conflict over the battleground and platform on which the Democrats should make their November fight developed here today with the return of Senator James A. Reed from a speaking tour in ten the South and Middle West. With fire in his eyes, Reed scoffed ' at reports that Ai Smith would be nominated by acclamation, or that the latter's nomination was assured. Reed denied that Smith’s strength in the East must be capitalized if a Democrat is to enter the White House next year. Reed also insisted that the major issues have been made here through the oil and election-buying investigations, intimating that someone besides a State Governor should be named for that reason alone. The Senator announced his intention of remaining in the race until he wins or is whipped There will be no one ballot gesture, he said, and then a gracious delivery of his delegations to the New York Governor. His position apparently kills die movement for Smith’s nomination by acclamation or on the second ballot. “I am going through to the end of the road,” said Reed. “I have never started a fight and stopped it, and won’t now.” KINDNESS BORES DOG Bolts Blanket-Lined Basket for Gay Life on Street. EXECUTIONERS SCARCE, THOUGH PAY IS HIGH Wafsaw Government Faces Problem in Getting Men Hanged. WARSAW, April 20.—The government here is having a hard time finding an executioner, althbugh the job is very remunerative. Formerly executions were carried cut by soldiers, but when the latter became unwilling to continue the gruesome work, the punishment was changed from shooting to hanging and was turned over to the civil authorities. The government then offered prospective candidates 100 zloty (aoout $11) for each execution. There were no applications so the pay was increased to 1,000 zloty (about $110), but there are still no candidates available.
