BUILD 2-MILE TUNNEL UNDER RIVERMERSEY Great Antiquity Claims for This Continent False, Says Scientist By United Press LIVERPOOL, April 20.—One hundred and fifty feet below the surface of the River Mersey men are at work contsructing a tunnel, two and a half miles long. It is estimated that it will cost $25,000,000 and that it will carry 2,000,000 vehicles during its first year. The construction allows for a accommodate four lines of traffic forty-four-foot roadway which will with sufficient space to allow vehicles to reach a speed of thirty miles an hour or more, with comparative safety. The lighting will consist of two rows of powerful incandescent lamps carefully shaded to prevent glare from the white or cream colored walls.
The tunnel will be the connecting link of a great network of arterial roads. These will ultimately run from the east coast of Yorkshire, through the industrial regions of Yorkshire and Lancashire, beneath the River Mersey by the tunnel, to join other roads to North Wales or the working areas of the Staffordshire oPtteries or Birmingham. A road through Lancashire which will cost $15,000,000 is already planned. The plan is not only a great aid to commercial traction systems to and from the docks in this district, but it will, it is hoped, entirely do away with the confusion which occurs on the ferry-boats when the weather is foggy, or the sea choppy. These have been a continual source of delay. A million tons of rock will be excavated and 137,000 tons of iron and 75,000 tons of cement will be used in the construction of the road and tunnel. Although the work is two months ahead of schedule, it will be three years before the tunnel will be opened for the public use.

Wardrobe Important Detail in Filming Picture; Colors Stressed. This Is the fourth of a series of twelve articles treating of the making of moving pictures. BY DAN THOMAS NEA Service Writer HOLLWOOD, Cal., April 20.—As soon as studio executives decide that a story will be filmed, the production department immediately begins to prepare the sets and wardrobe. This factor in motion picture production passes practically unnoticed. Yet it is essential. Nothing can be
done toward filming a picture until the prop and ward rob"! departments have completed their work. Much research work is required for many of the films, especially those presenting stories supposed to have occurred years ago and those with foreign backgrounds. Details as to architecture and modes of dress must be authentic. After the style of architecture has been definitely established, artists are put to work making sketches of the sets desired. It may be the exterior of a house, a living room, a bedroom, a kitchen or an entire street. Every studio has a large department where the plans for the sets are drawn. Everything right down to the minutest detail is included in these plans.* If there is to be a vase on table or a picture frame on a desk, it is put in the plans.
After the sketches have been ap- ! proved by the director and supervisor, they are sent to the prop, | where the sets are constructed. Because of their short period of use, the sets are built as cheaply as possible, but the cost often runs into thousands of dollars for a single set. j The prop men can do remarkable j thinks with their materials. furniture and woodwork is made to look centuries old. In all of this work, however, one primary factor must be remembered—“how will it photograph?” In the larger studios there are often as many as eight or ten companies working simultaneously. Yet the prop department must see to it that new sets are always ready for each company. As soon as a director has finished shooting on one set his next one must be ready or there will be a delay in production, j And a delay of even a few' hours j often adds thousands to the cost of j a film. PUSH ACTION ON MUSCLESHOALS May Bring Up Bill in House Despite Rules Committee. Bu United Press WASHINGTON, April 20.—Muscle Shoals legislation may be brought before the House despite efforts of the rules committee to defer its consideration, it became known today. Representative Morin, chairman, and other influential members of the House military affairs committee, are threatening to bring the bill before the House without waiting for a rule, and have so informed Chairman Snell of the rules committee, it is said. Each committee has two calendar days in which to bring up legislation reported by it to the House. The military affairs committee stands third on the calendar list, and Morin threatens to bring up the Muscle Shoals’ bill on its special day. Unusual for major legislation it is not unprecedented, congressmen say. The only other way to get consideration is by tw'O-thirds vote of the House, in case a rule is not granted.
important extra must be planned before filming starts. If the film is to be a “period picture,” that is, one relating to an earlier time, the style of clothes worn at that time must be determined. Clothes colors must be carefully chosen according to their photographic values. One might think that all of the clothes could be made from black, white and gray materials, since they are the colors! reproduced on the screen. Photo-1 graphically this could be done, but the effect would be too depressing upon the actors. Imagine a summer garden party with all the girls
wearing plain black and white dresses. Color gives the players the proper spirit. Colors must be combined in the right way or the camera won’t pick them up. A white dress could not be trimmed in blue, as both colors photograph white. Pure white is seldom used as it reflects the light. The white uniform that we see on a nurse on the screen usually is a i pale yellow or pink.
