SEEK PROBE OF SALT CREEK OIL FRAUD RUMORS Senate Pi/!ay Quiz Leases of t Rich Fields Adjacent to Teopot Dome. BY DEXTER M. KEEZER ' WASHINGTON, April 16.—Chairman Nye of the Senate public lands committee said today he will join Senator Norris of Nebraska in an effort to have the Senate oil investigation extended to the Salt Creek, Wyoming field. This is adjacent to the Teapot Dome’ reserve, and one of the richest oil fields, acre for acre, ever discovered. "The Salt Creek field, in many ways, looks even more deserving of investigation than Teapot Dome because the stakes involved in the disposition of Government lands there were so much larger,” Nye said. “I think our inquiry should be extended to the leases of Government lands in that field.” So far as oil production is con--1 cerned Teapot Dome is in the piker class compared with the Salt Creek field. This 60,000-acre field, composed entirely of Government lands, has produced hundreds of millions of dollars worth of oil in sixteen years of operation, and oil geologists say vast amounts remain. Oil operations in the Salt Creek field are carried on through leases of Government lands, made on a royalty basis by the Interior Department, in accordance with the Federal leasing act of 1920. This act applied to the public domain and did not relate to naval oil reserves. The proposed extension of the Senate oil investigation would authorize inquiry into the granting of these leases, and a probe of charges that frauds were involved in the acquisition of some of them. These familiar with the Salt Creek field assert that a Senate investigation would disclose a dramatic story of reckless playing for enormous oil stakes.
