DEATH RATE AT PEAK IN MARCH, LOWJNAUGUST City Health Officer Says Outdoor Life Benefit to Health. You have a good chance to live through the rest of the year now that you’ve lived through March, says Dr. Herman G. Morgan, city health board secretary. Death and sickness rate reaches its peak during March when weather conditions are unfavorable for the best health, he declared. In April there is an aftermath from influenza, pneumonia, sinis and respiratory infections, but the sickness and death rate shows a downward trend. Dr. Morgan said August, with its sweltering heat, is the healthiest month of the year in this climate. Os the 4,929 deaths in 1927 there were 403 in March compared with 344 in August. “Sunshine in April begins to draw folks out into the open and an occasional warm day makes them throw open the windows letting an abundance of fresh air in their houses,” Dr. Morgan said. “We begin to see a rapid decline in sickness and deaths this season of the year when everyone is taking up their favorite outdoor sport. This is strong evidence of the result of fresh air and hygienic living conditions. “For years August has shown the best health record despite the cur-

rent beliefs that ‘dog days’ and maladies go along with the hot months. This is particularly true in recent years since pubilc health measures have been designed to improve sanitation. “Public health measures aided by outdoor life have been more successful in preventing hot weather maladies than winter diseases. Winter maladies are hard to treat because of the indoor-existence of a high percentage of the nation’s population.” June and July also ifjcord a low sickness and death rate. RABBIT YOUNG SELDOMFOUND Broods Too Well Hidden Even for Naturalists. By Science Service WASHINGTON, April 13.—Jack rabbits may be dumb, but they know how to hide their young so wel lthat very few are ever found by naturalists, Dr. Chas. T. Vorhies, of the University of Arizona, and Dr. Walter P. Taylor, of the United States Biological Survey, told members of the American Society of Mammalogists here today. The various jack rabbits are range pests of outstanding destructiveness. In fenced plots on the open range near Tucson, Ariz., jack rabbits and other rodents consumed 81 per cent of the range forage. One season eighty-eight acres of cotton were destroyed in one locality, entailing a loss to the farmers of $14,960. The breeding season of the jack rabbits of the Southwest embraces nine months of the year, January to September, although the number of young in each litter is small, usually only from one to tjjgee, with a maximum of 5. The food of the rabbits includes several species of important forage grasses, as well as the bark of mesquites, catclaws and palo verdes. They drink water when available but over most of the year they rely on cactus and buried tuberous roots for liquid refreshment. if you can pay rent, you can own a home of your own!
